be sure to read the Playboy article (it is a very good piece of investigative journalism and nothing to do with porn) and Time Magazine's "The Thriving Cult of Greed and Power"

Also, Anonymous upload their training manual a while back with instructions for the people who rope in the clueless public for the fleecing on street corners. It's full of gems on how to manipulate people into coming in for auditing, essentially by persuading them that they are psychologically damaged and in desperate need of their help. You might want to look that up too.

A police force is easy to setup and easy to take down. They are not soldiers. The first thing that happens when a regime falls is the police start looting and abusing/murdering civilians

I want to know who her superiors are. That's who we should be calling and writing, not her. I don't think any number of phone calls to her directly will persuade her to resign her $500k/year job!

On another note, I think PlantScientist is exactly right. The real culprits are those in positions of power who order armed cops to break up peaceful protests: the Chancellor, the mayors of all the cities where this has been done, and the Federal government (DHS) which has been coordinating with the mayors. They are the people who need to go. it's their offices the protesters should be occupying.

Dear Mr. Cop,

I understand your preference for a steady paycheck over the core principles of democracy, as exhibited in many of your other posts -- core principles of which peaceful protest that does not endanger others is one (and if you don't believe me, Google "first amendment").

However, do not expect the same understanding from the citizens of this country, whose value priorities are different from yours -- for example, those who care less about your paycheck than they do about the daily flood of photos of students, veterans, and the elderly being brutalized without provocation by your kind. (You may consider not complying with your orders to be provocation, but that's only because you've gotten into the habits and mindset of a power-tripping a**hole).

At the same time, I understand that what we see in these photos is simply what your kind has been trained to do. This is why I believe that anger against you is unproductive. If someone orders a thug to go and beat up someone, you can't really hold it against the thug -- it's in his nature. You CAN, however, hold those who issued the order accountable: in this case, the Chancellor. And that is precisely what this petition aims to do.

TL;DR Replace all those in power who think it's OK to order armed thugs to beat up peaceful protesters. Everyone wins.

Sign a UC Davis professor's petition calling for the immediate resignation of the university Chancellor who ordered this attack. Here is an actual opportunity to let those in power know that THIS IS NOT OKAY.

(had to register on the site to be able to sign successfully, but registration took less than 30 seconds).

That belies the fact that many people find the moral courage and inspiration for what they do in the their faith; and that faith is central to their understanding of their place in the Universe and their role in it, which motivates their actions.

Bought these as gifts a couple years ago. They do not work. As in, they do not fly. When they do fly, they always land in the same spot, so you can just sleepwalk there and pick it up. Good concept, Chinese execution.

It's not complicated. People who are insecure (for whatever reason - not necessarily subconsciously homosexual) will look for an outgroup to denigrate, in order to bolster themselves in comparison. This is not limited to homophobia, but plays a role in most cases of bullying of any kind. By being different, homosexuals provide a natural target outgroup, who is already socially marginalized and therefore a safe target.

Kind of like Christians in /r/atheism.

Wow, what a bigoted little topic! Blaming anti-gay violence on religious people -- just as the Nazis blamed all their troubles on the Jews.

I don't personally know of a single follower of any religion who would advocate violence against someone based on their sexual orientation. Period. They might disapprove of it, but it's one amazing leap from that to assuming that they would approve of or commit violent acts.

The point I was making is that people sign up for the armed forces knowing that they will be trained to kill, and obviously being willing to kill someone they don't know based on someone else's command. I don't think it makes them sociopaths, but it does make ending up in a situation where you have to decide to kill people (children or otherwise) an informed choice that these people are making. They did not end up in Afghanistan by accident or misunderstanding. They made choices.

More important to address, I think, is your second point about the President being responsible for the incident, and therefore the soldier being ethically in the clear. In life, we do not have the luxury of abdicating our moral sense to a higher authority. That is what allowed the Holocaust to happen, but that's only one example -- I bet you can trace just about every example of serious misconduct by any hierarchical organization to this very thing: people abdicating moral responsibility to someone else, and "just doing their job," taking a moral holiday. The true test of moral integrity is to stand up for what's right even at a cost to yourself, and not rely on any of the many excuses we can all come up with (e.g., I was ordered to do it) when we know what's right and what's wrong.

And as I said in my original post, a huge part of knowing what's right and what's wrong is recognizing that all human beings are equally our brothers, and not just our buddies. That is the secret to a beautiful world.

You make it sound as if the OP was just walking along, minding his own business, and the Afghans just started lobbing mortars at him out of sheer malice. Of course he had every right to defend himself!
But, let's take it back a few steps. There is the issue of choosing to be trained to kill people, and then deployed into a situation where you will certainly be required to do so. The issue of being in someone else's country. And the fact that while he and his "brothers" made the deliberate choice to do this, the Afghan children did not -- even if they volunteered to help his father, they were probably too young to comprehend what they were doing -- probably saw it as just "helping daddy."

"The right to defend yourself" argument falls apart here in light of the circumstances of making a choice to be part of an invasion of another country. I have the same objection to it that I have to Israel's claims that whatever excessive brutality or repression it perpetrates is justified by self-defense, despite perpetrating a systematic apartheid, repression and land theft against its opponents.

In conclusion, I am not arguing that anyone here is morally right or morally wrong. It's an ugly and unfortunate situation from all angles. But I would caution against claiming that anyone involved is "ethically in the clear."

I had to make a hard choice once by killing Afghan children that were resupplying their father with mortars. I regret it all and think i will go to hell if it exists for it but i would rather do that then see more of my brothers die to mortar fire needlessly.

I understand your choice in killing children rather than endangering your fellow Marines. At the same time, it is only when humanity realizes that all human beings are your brothers that we might finally have a chance of creating a world worth living in.

Why don't scientists publish a "layman's version" of their findings publicly along with their journal publications? by neolduserin askscience

[–]Stranger2k 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The real reason is that the reward structure of a scientist is based entirely on what is published in specialized scientific journals for other scientists to read. That is what tenure, promotions, status, etc. are based on. Writing in popular journals would take time away from that, and do nothing for the scientist.

This is completely wrong, because most scientific research is supported by taxpayer money. At a minimum, scientists owe it to the public to let them know what they are finding -- and this is especially true in fields where findings can be directly utilized by the public, such as the social sciences. Unfortunately, until the universities or grant-giving agencies start setting minimum requirements for the dissemination of results, it will never happen.
