To All: How do you feel about public prayer? by SmartSukain DebateReligion

So you're saying if I want to walk the stage to get my diploma I have to pray? That's not right, especially considering its a state institution. In America we are supposed to have separation of church and state.

How are you bound to go if its optional?

private organizations can do what they want.

What if they are funded by the state?

Seriously, there is no "neutral" position.

I think the neutral position would be to let people pray in groups before the ceremony, it doesn't hamper those who want to pray, and it does not have to include those who choose not to pray. Win win for everyone. Hell plan for it and put it in the guide, "prayer sessions will be held for those who choose to pray 15 minutes before the graduation ceremony outside the auditorium." This makes it optional not required.

Easy, I'm coming to an event for a graduation or a football game. I do not believe in a God, or I believe in a different God. I am forced to pray with others. I can understand going to a church for public prayer, but not an event which people of all faiths attend.

By the definition of subjugate, I'm being forced to do something I don't want to do.

I have no problem if some institution requires me to engage in prayer.

I do if its a state institution. If you are not a state institution or do not work for the state then you are protected by your freedom of speech. At least here in America. Even given the freedom of speech though, I do not think I would use it for public prayer myself as I would not like to subjugate others to my beliefs. But this is my personal opinion on things.

You're not being asked to pray along.

Actually, yes I was. That's the problem I have. While I understand ANYONE can give a speech about anything, its our freedom of speech (at least here in America). The prayer was in the program and was organized by people who work at the college, paid for by the state. It was also lead by these same people. What happened during separation of church and state?

Further more, I have no problem if someone who did not organize the event wanted to pay tribute, pray to God. It would irk me yes, but it is their right given the first amendment. Just like someone else would have the right to tribute their success to their god, or lack of god.

You're right, my position is that public prayer should not happen. I'm against the idea of others spending time "bowing their heads" to listen to your prayer at a publicly organized function that is not church. You are asking other participants to submit to a God which you may believe in but others may not. This is why I believe public prayer should be reserved for churches where the members are willing to listen to and pray along with the other members.

prayers should be given from a theoretical "theologically neutral" position.

They should be, but typically are not, at least here in the very Republican state of Texas. Even if they are theologically neutral, it would not be so from the perspective of an atheist. (which I am not but, I could see their frustration).

I hope you continue to respond, as I'm not frustrated at all; I'm actually happy to get your perspective because it seems so few in this subreddit take your stance. :)

I'm not asking that someone's beliefs be compromised. It wouldn't bother me one bit if a group of people wanted to pray before the ceremony in a small group. In this way no one is forcing their beliefs on anyone else.

Again I'm not talking about churches, just public events. I think its unfair to have public prayer when there's so many other religions (non-religions) attending. You're forcing your beliefs on them.

I heard of ex-Muslims who also said its not the same. They tame down the English version one a lot. I'm just not willing to learn a language just to read a book.

Okay, so my next question how does one read the bible? I find it so boring. I want to read it just to expand my knowledge and understanding. Is there a specific way to read it so I don't have to start with "he who begot her, who begot him and her, who begot x...etc".

Oh I'm hoping someone of that faith can respond. :)

For you as an atheist and other atheist I would ask if you study the Koran and other religious text as often as you study the bible? If not why do you focus on the bible?

(I'm assuming you study the bible. For your ability to pull out the quotes you need form it.)

What about graduation ceremonies? Or Football games? And I'm not talking about a small group of people outside the stadium or something, I'm talking about the announcer leading everyone in prayer.

So something I don't understand. People who are Christan say they follow the word of God/Jesus <- (they're the same right according to Christians) yet so much of the bible was spoken by other people. In your example Matthew. Sometimes these people even counter the things Jesus/God say. How do Christians decide what to believe and what not to believe? I know you may not be the person to answer all these questions, but I'm really curious.
