How to Write a Book in Three Days by HawaiianBrianin writing

[–]SirDucky 11 points12 points ago

A lot of people have been pointing out how formulaic this advice is. I agree, and I have little interest in writing cookie-cutter novels. However, this is GREAT advice nonetheless if you flip on your critical thinking switch. Here is what I read:

  • When we say a book 3 days, we mean a first draft.
  • Before you start, have an outline. On paper. A bad plan is better than meticulous indecision.
  • For 3 days, write according to your outline
  • Voila, a rough draft that can be edited and polished

As you can see, this isn't about pulp or formula. It's about having a plan and realizing that whatever you write will not be perfect on the first pass.

“For those who believe in God, most of the big questions are answered. But for those of us who can’t readily accept the God formula, the big answers don’t remain stone-written. We adjust to new conditions and discoveries. We are pliable. Love need not be a command or faith a dictum. I am my own God. We are here to unlearn the teachings of the church, state, and our educational system. We are here to drink beer. We are here to kill war. We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us.”

Thanks for your input! If you have the time, could you expand a little more on why you think Dreamweaver is fantastic? It would help me get a better idea of how I "should" be using it.

Eyeballing it in firebug, it looks like your columns in .wrapper are all floated left or right to achieve their effect. The problem is that containing tags will not expand in size in order to contain floated elements. It comes from the idea that floats are "taken from the normal flow". (See This)

The common solution is to add an element within .wrapper at the end that is NOT floated and is explicitly told to "clear" (go below) all floats. Then .wrapper will expand to contain that element (even if it's empty). So you could add something like <div style="clear:both"></div> to the end. A more sophisticated fix is something like (This).

How did peasants shave before the mass production of safety razors began? by AdmiralPlanetin AskHistorians

A sharp knife does an adequate job if you're careful and take your time. Peasants would typically have access to an edged instrument.

For fuck's sake people, atheism isn't about tolerance. by MellowMelonin atheism

[–]SirDucky 0 points1 point ago

Tolerance is about tolerance. It's about people who disagree and still function as a society. It was framed in a time when hate was a one-way street, but that distinction is muddied now.

I expect all of you to treat your fellow human beings by how they act, not the belief-box they were born into. Hateful people are hateful. Whatever reason they justify it with, it's just hate.

Had a great cocktail in Cambodia. They called it Orange Contreau, but they must have mixed it with something. Help me rediscover it so I can make it my new drink! by SirDuckyin cocktails

Clear, but orange colored. Served on the rocks in Cambodia, so maybe neat in a cooler climate. In a normal glass / tumbler. Thanks for the help.

You have a bit of puppy fat, but not in an unattractive way. A lot of other people have mentioned that you look shy, which I agree with, so maybe just smile more?
