TROPHY CASE

Any good resources on getting into Teach for America by dunmiregin AskReddit

[–]SeagullNotiq 0 points1 point ago

What part in the process did you make it to? Did you make it to the phone interview? It's hard to give advice without really knowing much about the details of your situation. What are your grades like? How was your resume? How did you feel about your mission statement in the application?

Yep, I enjoy doing a lot of concert photography and the ISO performance of the 7d vs. my 450d was the tipping point

Our landlords say we can't keep her because of her breed. Help? by SexualBadlandsin pitbulls

[–]SeagullNotiq 1 point2 points ago

It wouldn't hurt to try and get her CGC certified, although it sounds like you don't have a whole lot of time. We've had success when the landlord is able to meet the dog and see what they're really like. That being said, many places have insurance coverages that specifically state they do not cover bully breeds.

Can someone help me understand the nature of personal commitment. Particularly, are there critical factors, or ideal conditions that compel a person to make a sincere commitment to a another person, a cause or their self improvement? by zenmanvanin AskSocialScience

[–]SeagullNotiq 1 point2 points ago

Sorry I don't have sources for this off the top of my head. In terms of developing a strong commitment for a worker, I know that some sense of autonomy and variation is key to strengthening and sustaining internalized commitment.

New to r/pitbulls and didn't want to hog the page with a bunch of posts so here's all my favorite pics of our rescues by SeagullNotiqin pitbulls

Thanks, it's all extremely rewarding. We don't have a specific facility but we're spread out around the Seattle/Tacoma area in Washington State.

That would be pretty neat, here's another picture of her with Jada who tries to act as her guide when they play by dragging on Tilly's collar

Tilly is 5-months-old and was born completely blind by SeagullNotiqin pitbulls

[–]SeagullNotiq[S] 2 points3 points ago

Haha she actually senses objects and walls before crashing into them extremely well for how young she is. The combination of a great sense of smell and utilizing her hearing a lot more than most dogs her age makes it hard to even tell that she's blind sometimes. Right now she's learning how to go up and down stairs by voice command and it's going really well.

Question about ear cropping. by dlishusin pitbulls

[–]SeagullNotiq 0 points1 point ago

Aside from what's already been said about the increase in health risks after the surgery, there is also the very real potential of complications with the anesthesia during the cropping process. We have seen multiple dogs that have died as a result of these complications simply because a breeder wanted a specific look and had very little concern for the safety of the dog.

In general this procedure is a very selfish act on the part of the owner because they want to achieve the macho look that cropped ears provide while serving absolutely no proven functional purpose.

Planning on adopting a pit and had some general questions. by goldfodahoneyin pitbulls

[–]SeagullNotiq 10 points11 points ago

  • I have never come in contact with a pit bull/shepherd mix but my experiences with certain mixes in general is that you need to be aware of the qualities of each breed and not just how they look. For example, GSDs in general are highly vigilant, task driven and energetic. Combine this with the terrier qualities in a pit bull and there is potential for serious hyperactivity (this is a generalization, each mix is going to be vastly different based on the amount of each breed in the makeup).

  • There is no such thing as a free dog, you have to factor in vaccines, spay/neutering (if not already altered), toys, crate, things of yours that they are most certainly going to chew up, bones, etc. You also obviously have to think about food costs, I feed my dogs Taste of the Wild and it goes for about $50/bag (the big one, I think it's 40 pounds) and this lasts about 2-3 weeks for two medium-large size dogs.

  • In my experience, pit bulls are great apartment dogs. As a rescue, we do not require that applicants have a fenced yard like many other groups do. As long as your dog gets regular exercise and has plenty of toys to occupy them it should be alright. That being said, I would highly recommend that you buy a crate and crate train your dog for when you are gone. This will not only incredibly speed up the house training process if they haven't learned yet, but it will also reduce anxiety and chewing in the long run.

  • When introducing the two dogs you need to make sure you do it in an open, neutral area where neither dog feels cornered or pressured to face the other. It is highly advisable to have them both off-leash in a large, contained area and allow them to dictate how the introductions take place. In our rescue, we do not adopt out a dog to a home that has another dog of the same sex. Especially if one or both of the animals isn't fixed, this can lead to aggression and attempts to assert dominance.

  • These dogs need all the help they can get when it comes to ensuring that they are raised and trained in the most effective, supportive environment possible. It is crucial that you do not put them in a situation where something could possibly go wrong, this includes no off-leash dog parks, no leaving them outside while you're not watching, no leaving them alone with small children, and no introducing them to other dogs while both are on tight leashes.

  • I would suggest checking out BadRap.org's training and resources page as a good starting point to becoming educated and prepared for the breed.

Ban these vicious pitbulls! by chifunkerain aww

[–]SeagullNotiq 0 points1 point ago

While I agree with you that there are many errors in the CDC study, I would like to correct your statement that pit bulls have the greatest jaw strength of any dog; this is not true. I do not have the statistics on hand but there have been several tests performed that indicate multiple other breeds possess greater bite strength. The attributes that lend themselves to the belief that pit bulls possess some superior jaw strength have more to do with their extremely high pain threshold and the instincts of a terrier that include a violent head shake while biting down on a perceived threat or prey.

This report conducted by the CDC is touted time and time again by individuals and groups who wish to enact forms of breed-specific legislation to ban "pit bull-type dogs". The fact of the matter is the CDC used invalid analysis when developing this study, which they have admitted to after the fact. When gathering statistics to determine the number of bites/attacks/fatalities they relied almost exclusively on news articles. This is not valid analysis. You should also know that the CDC no longer keeps track of dog bite statistics based on breed categorization mainly because people who report attacks cannot be certain what breed it was.

You might want to check out a recent study released by the National Canine Research Council which gives detailed accounts and analysis of all dog bite-related fatalities that were reported in 2010.

You might also be interested in the 2006 ruling handed down in Toledo, OH in the case of Toledo vs. Tellings. I'll include some excerpts from the expert testimony that was agreed upon by the expert witnesses from both sides.

"During the early years of dog fighting, pit bulls were specifically selected for non-aggression against humans, since any attack against a person disqualified the pit bull. Thus, any human-aggressive pit bull was destroyed and any possibly linked genetic trait was not passed on."

"Although most of the experts agreed that one could breed for aggressiveness, many testified that because genetic transmission of a behavior trait involved many complicated factors, such breeding attempts were inefficient. For example, just as a litter of ten greyhounds bred from two faster running parent dogs might produce only one faster running pup, a litter of pit bulls from two aggressive parent dogs was likely to produce only one offspring with a more aggressive temperament."

Yeah that's the link that I was on earlier to find more info on his squadron, which was why I said A-4 on accident. They had a really neat emblem when he was just entering but then had to change it because of the whole atomic weapon thing.

Thank you! Growing up he never talked too much about Vietnam or his flying experiences in general but we've been talking more and more recently. My grandpa also wrote a book called The Missing Man: Politics and the MIA.
