TROPHY CASE

Need moving company recommendations by macdrein nova

[–]SVENGAL1 1 point2 points ago

Try Suburban Solutions. Found them on Angie's List and used them for a recent interstate move. Although young, they are very professional and very efficient. Although a little more pricey (not sure about intrastate moves), they will give you an estimate based on the # of items / boxes you need moved. The price is fixed (unless you grossly underestimate / overestimate the # of boxes and items).

I am using them again this week in a move from Boston back to the VA area. It just so happens that they have a drop-off in MA this week and was able to coordinate. Given my previous experience with Suburban, I was excited that I can use them again because I trust them to take care of my stuff.

Does anyone have a resource for Volunteer efforts in Nova? by kingzetain nova

I used to volunteer at the Homeless Children's Playtime Project in DC. Every week volunteers play / watch children (ages 1 - 12) of underprivileged families, without homes, in shelters, in transition housing, etc. 'Playtime' is usually during the week from ~6 pm - 8 or 9 pm. This gives parents the opportunity to wind down away and relax and also is great for the kids to get out and play and get their mind off of the hardships their families are experiencing.

Good points though.

The nationwide general strike against NDAA and SOPA begins Monday. Spread, join, and be heard loud and clear by your government. by philosoraptor45in occupywallstreet

[–]SVENGAL1 0 points1 point ago

The problem in America is the fact that our government is obviously quite flawed. Our elected members of Congress are supposed to vote according to the views of their constituents, but in fact do not. Most of our Congresspeople have no idea how we stand on specific issues, such as SOPA, and instead vote according to what they think to be the right choice or what they are being fed by their team and party members. Am I pissed that our freedoms are slowly diminishing and that our government is being run by corporations? Absofuckinglutely. Am I going to travel to DC and protest on the mall? Absolutely not. I can't. I have responsibilities at home that prevent me from attending. I feel terrible that I am doing absolutely nothing to prevent this from happening, other than writing to my congressperson, but what is one to do otherwise?

Any W.Mass shredders willing to help a n00b? by gatsby365in snowboarding

[–]SVENGAL1 0 points1 point ago

Boston, MA area here. Would be more than happy to help, although lessons from certified boarding instructors may be your best be on your first time out. One you get your legs, we can work on carving, balance, etc. Most importantly, HAVE FUN! It can be frustrating starting out, but after you get past the first day, it's smooth sailing.

Search for videos online to get the gist of some of the basics. Good luck this year.

DC/VA/MD Area; Which hills are good? by 123kijin snowboarding

[–]SVENGAL1 0 points1 point ago

To reiterate what the guys / gals here have already stated, Seven Springs, PA (~3.5 - 4hrs) and Snowshoe, WV (~4.5 - 5 hrs) are the largest and "best" resorts around the DC area, although i have heard good things about Blue Knob.

Having previously lived in VA for ~15 years, for a day trip (1.5 - 2 hrs), Whitetail is your best bet. It does get crowded, so get there early before everything gets skied off.

Also, Whitetail is a dry mountain (Quaker country).

board question. by babyfatsin snowboarding

[–]SVENGAL1 0 points1 point ago

I ride very similar to what you are describing. I am more of a freeride kind of guy and I just picked up the GNU Altered Genetics (i have yet to take it out this season). It is a Rocker or reverse-camber board with Magnetraction edges and apparently carves like a beast while reaping the benefits of a rocker board. Again, I have yet to take it out this season so I can't tell you from first hand experience. My previous board was a Ride Control 2008 which had a camber design and it was a great all-mountain board.

Try taking a look at Snowboard Review which breaks down camber versus rocker, no camber, freestyle, freeride, etc. and gets pretty in-depth into their board reviews.

It looks like scrapple or a mush of the pork scraps left over from butchering. It's like a hot dog's bastard child.

I definitely plan to ride all over New England and am excited. The only 'decent' places I could get to from DC was Showshoe and Seven Springs and those were about 5 hours away. 3-4 hours for Stowe, Sugarbush, etc... I am looking forward to it.
