Agreed. I hardly notice it unless I'm actually sitting next to a smoker at the bar or something.

CF Redditors in a Committed Relationship, Tell Us How You Met Your Significant Other. by fightswithbillin childfree

My SO and I are another OKCupid couple. I had "doesn't want kids" selected and a line in my profile about being sterilized. He wasn't outwardly CF so he didn't come up in any of my searches; fortunately, I showed up in his.

We dated long-distance for months, driving across state lines to spend weekends together. The no-kids topic was brought up several times in the context of my sterilization, our experiences on OKC, and life plans in general. He mentioned that he had considered a vasectomy more than once - I'm sure a young nephew and a couple of single-mom exes factored into that. Point is, we were in agreement from the start and that was a huge relief. We've been living together - along with my cat and his dogs - since last autumn.

Whoops, sorry! BCBS = Blue Cross Blue Shield. The insurance thing is frustrating for sure. I've since moved and changed jobs and lost my coverage so I'm extremely grateful that I was able to get it done during that brief window.

If you're interested in Essure specifically, all I did was go on their site and use their "Find a doctor" page. You may still have to make calls to a few different offices before you find one who's willing to work on a CF woman, but it's a start!

That's understandable, but also unfortunate in how limiting it can be. I wasn't looking for long distance but I also lived in a craphole town/state and didn't have many options.

I was in Alabama at the time. Had the procedure done by a doc in Huntsville - sadly, he has since closed his practice. :(

I had BCBS through my employer and they covered the majority of it. In the end I think I paid a little over $300 for copays and deductible. Mine was done at the hospital with anesthesia and the whole nine yards, so I would've easily been looking at $5k+ if not for BCBS.

Ten within ten miles? That's actually kind of amazing. When I was on OKC I had to broaden my search to hundreds of miles just to find a couple of (outwardly) CF guys.

I did end up meeting my now-boyfriend on there but we lived in different states at the time AND he didn't have "doesn't want kids" selected, which I'm guessing is pretty common in order for people to keep their options open. Personally, I had it selected and even wrote about being sterilized in my profile. I was looking for quality over quantity, I guess.

Congrats! I had Essure done two days after my 25th birthday.

Why? Because I've known since before I hit the double-digits that I didn't want children of my own. Once I became sexually active the possibility of falling pregnant became a full-blown source of anxiety, and that fear was preventing me from really enjoying sex. I was miserable for years.

Now I feel great, of course. No more hormones, no more spending $$$ on birth control. When I got back into the dating game it was also convenient for weeding out the you'll-change-your-mind guys. I'm actually coming up on two whole years sterilized and I still get giddy when I stop to think about it!

Is anyone using ESSURE? by nebockin childfree

[–]Ronove 0 points1 point ago*

"Between November of 1998 and June of 2001, a total of 745 women underwent an Essure placement procedure in two separate clinical investigations to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Essure System." From the summary on the FDA's approval page. It's new, but not that new anymore. I'd like to think they're keeping tabs on things still, but who knows?

Anyway, a Google search will bring up every risk and side effect imaginable as well as forum posts that read like horror stories. Those of us whose procedures went flawlessly generally aren't as vocal, which is why I try to jump into these threads and voice my own experience. I had it done two years ago - no side effects, no drawn-out recovery period. My story and a couple of others are in the comments of this post if you're interested.

*Edited because I misunderstood the "4 years' worth of data" line, derp.

How long do I have to wait until I can get that ligation? by MrsFelsteadin childfree

[–]Ronove 3 points4 points ago

Awesome! Yeah, I'd be happy to tell you more, and you're welcome to PM me if you'd like. :)

I do feel like I need to start with some sort of disclaimer though. My procedure went flawlessly, but during the years that I spent researching it and reading people's experiences I found countless forum posts, etc. full of complaints and "horror stories". You will likely find the same if you start Googling. I can only assume that a) these women are the vocal minority and b) my being young and healthy and childfree made a huge difference. Whatever the case, my personal experience was an excellent one.

I did experience cramping and discharge the day of the procedure... and that was it. It felt like bad period cramps but nothing unbearable, and by the time I went to sleep that night I really wasn't uncomfortable at all. The next day I was poolside, in a swimsuit. I'm coming up on two whole years since the procedure and I haven't noticed any side effects, changes to my period/cycle/cramps or anything else.

[–]Ronove 13 points14 points ago

You'll get grief, and you'll probably visit at least a half-dozen doctors before one takes you seriously, but you're absolutely old enough. I was sterilized (Essure instead of a tubal) just a couple of days after my 25th birthday.

There used to be a list of childfree-friendly doctors on happilychildfree.com but it looks like that site is no more, which is unfortunate. Since I went the Essure route I just went to the official site, pulled up a map showing who in my area performed the procedure, and started narrowing the list down that way. If nothing else you may want to just start calling and visiting offices once that insurance kicks in! Definitely worth your time in the end.

The ヤケド bit in the first line is katakana and the rest is kanji (the Chinese characters) and hiragana. But yeah, from this alone I have no clue what the packet could be used for, sorry! Did any other literature come with it?

SilentDanni is right - this is Japanese. It's basically a list of warnings:

-Danger! Beware of low-temperature burns.

-Please peel the paper off without crumpling.

-Please do not stick directly to skin.

-Please refer to the instructions (often/thoroughly).

Alright, r/childfree, I need your help! by dizkaimoin childfree

[–]Ronove 7 points8 points ago

I had the Essure procedure done two years ago. It's very similar to the Adiana option that walrusknowsbest mentioned and I highly recommend it. Anyway, the doctors I visited for consultations (before finding "the one") all used the usual:

a) You're young and healthy - don't you think you'll change your mind?

b) You're single - what if you meet Mr. Right and he has/wants kids?

c) There are all of these temporary options like the pill, the patch, the shot, etc. - why not one of them just in case?

You've got the right idea, though. Be prepared. Do you research. Plan your counterarguments but be calm and don't take the bingos personally. Also, having the support of a spouse or close relative helps - harder for the docs to claim you're being rash when someone else is there to back you up.

Women of Reddit: How much does a males height influence your level of attractiveness towards him? by Fetus_Omelettein AskReddit

[–]Ronove 1 point2 points ago

I'm 5'6" and female and I can honestly say that a guy's height never factors into whether or not I find him attractive. My boyfriend is probably a good inch shorter than me, and in the past I've dated guys ranging from my height to 6'7". It's all about the individual.

Asain markets in Atlanta? by m1garand30064in Atlanta

[–]Ronove 1 point2 points ago

I actually prefer Buford Highway Farmer's Market over Super H Mart. My bf cooks a ton of Korean food so we go at least twice a month. Prices tend to be a bit better and they stock just about everything you can imagine.

H Mart's little cafeteria area is pretty great, though. That alone can be worth the trip.

What oddients said. I had Essure done two days after my 25th birthday, and in Alabama of all places. The doctor who did it wasn't the first one I approached - you may have to meet with a dozen or more before finding one who will listen, but don't give up. :)
