What theory informs your practice as a therapist? by Robot64in psychology

[–]Robot64[S] 0 points1 point ago

I love Rogerian therapy, it always seemed the best way to build relationships, but not necessarily as helpful later on in the therapeutic process. Do you agree?

Thanks for your answer! Could I ask what populations you work with mostly?

thanks for your answer. I had a teacher that told us "trust yourself, trust the client, trust the process". Sounds so simple but so much harder than I thought it would be.

to some extent, although some parts of some theories are very outdated, or have techniques been shown to be harmful to certain populations. I recognize that most therapists are eclectic at this point, but was mostly wondering about the theory they are drawn to the most, as many theories have different ideas about the therapists role. Are you the teacher of skills, the one with the interpretation of their behaviour? do you believe that clients already have the tools they need within them that you need to help access? do you believe in an equal relationship in the therapeutic setting? are people driven by instincts or are they striving towards mastery? your beliefs about people will line up better with one specific theory over another in most cases.

If a law passed requiring an iq/lifeskills test in order to procreate would you vote for it? by MastodonMetalin AskReddit

I work in an inner city school. Before I did I would have answered the same as you. After seeing families with 6 or 7 kids who are being raised in poverty under very neglectful/abusive conditions I am beginning to wish there was some kind of licensing test for these parents. Half their kids get removed into foster care and they just keep having babies. I have a lot of empathy for what the parents are going through, many of them were abused themselves and they often have substance abuse problems as well as clinical depression. I hope they find ways to heal but they definitely should not be having kids.

A few years ago I used to have panic attacks every time I left my apartment, now I can leave without a thought. Other things still trigger me but at least I'm not sitting at home all day every day any more.

The green mile. When the jerk guard doesn't wet the sponge, I lost it. I cried so hard we had to pause the movie so I could go calm down.

I was told at the doctors today that I had beautiful veins. What is the strangest compliment you've ever received? by carramrod13in AskReddit

Haha I get my share of that too. My favourite one was when I was visiting the southern USA and some homeless guy stopped me and was like "honey you must be from up north." I replied that I was from Canada. He says "I knew it! You know how I knew? You are SOOOOOO white!"

Edit: Clarified the South of what

I've had multiple people compliment me on how white my skin is. I've never thought of it as a trait to be complimented on, I burn easily and reflect flashes in photos.

Reddit, do you think it's better to be unhappy with someone or lonely? by acalltoapathyin AskReddit

[–]Robot64 1 point2 points ago

Loneliness is a really awkward emotion. It can make you feel really desperate and frustrated. It's one that not a lot of people are comfortable talking about. When I moved to a new city I was incredibly lonely but I think despite the sadness this caused it pushed me to be more open to talk to the people around me and take more time to get to know my classmates and coworkers. Now I can't imagine my life without the friends I've made. When you are with someone who makes you unhappy I feel like it narrows your world view because you are just miserable. When you are alone and lonely I think you open yourself up to more opportunities.

My family has always called TV remotes 'TV turners'. I didn't realize that wasn't a common term used for a TV remote until my friends asked what a 'TV turner' was. Reddit, what weird names do you call things? by dinosaurs7dragonsin AskReddit

My family refers to the penis as a donnaker and the vagina as psnaraus or a wazoo. This has caused some very confusing conversations when they decided to also call a part of their sailboat the donnaker as well.
