Counter Argument: Is RVP Worth Keeping? by memoryfailurein Gunners

[–]ResidentAlien 19 points20 points ago

It would cost more than we'd get by selling him to buy an equal replacement.

We need him (or someone just as good) along with some more purchases to challenge for trophies.

Therefore, we have to keep him.

Unless, of course, the first statement changes.

4 seems like a good number, honestly.

Am I just forgetting a year where a 5+ seed had a legitimate gripe about not having a shot at the title?

Homeopathic remedies for morning sickness (worked for me!) by mamaveganin BabyBumps

[–]ResidentAlien 0 points1 point ago

I'm thrilled that these remedies have worked for you, but many homeopathic remedies, particularly the higher dilutions, are selling you more or less cheap solvent at higher prices.

Consider a 30C dilution, which means whatever ingredient is diluted 1:100 30 times, which is the equivalent of a 1:10 dilution 60 times, or reducing your starting amount by a factor of 10 to the 60th power. This means that if you start with 1060 (1 with 60 zeroes after it) atoms, you'd wind up with one atom after your 30C dilution.

So how many atoms is 1060? There are about 1049 atoms in the earth. That means you'd need 1011, or 100 billion Earths to get to 1060 atoms. So dissolving the number of atoms in 100 billion earths by a 30C factor would result in one atom of the starting material in your 30C dilution. So assuming the homeopathy producer is starting with a smaller number of starting atoms, I am as mathematically certain as I can be about just about anything that the homeopathic "remedy" contains only whatever solvent they're using.

For another example, consider Oscillococcinum, a flu remedy which dilutes duck liver to 200C. 100200 = 10400. There are about 1080 atoms in the observable universe. So imagine a universe where each atom is actually a tiny universe just like ours, with 1080 atoms in it, like that bit at the end of Men in Black where the galaxy/universe/whatever was a marble in some other galaxy/universe/whatever. You'd be able to have 5 levels of universe (our universe as an atom in one, with that second universe an atom in another, with that third universe an atom in another and that fourth universe as an atom in the 5th) to get to 10400 atoms. (1080)5 = 10400. So if I start with that many atoms, I might have one atom in my oscillococcinum. But otherwise, I'm just buying the solvent.

Those things pretty much come up when I explain why they have to call ahead and might need to wear masks.

Parents refusing to vaccinate children by amelioratedflanin medicalschool

[–]ResidentAlien 5 points6 points ago

Pediatrician here.

I tell my parents who don't vaccinate that they have need to call the nurse line before they come in with a fever. Then the nurse can triage anything that might be pertussis or whatever and have them come in the side door and be waiting with masks and Purell for them. If they don't call ahead, then I consider firing.

More generally, patients do lots of stupid shit that puts themselves and my other patients at risk. If I kicked 'em all out, well, I'd have plenty of availability...

'Wilshere may not be fit for next season' - AW by tomarrin Gunners

[–]ResidentAlien 7 points8 points ago

This is 100% the case. Wenger is terrified of Wilshere playing any games for anyone else this off-season. He's just too important. A healthy Wilshere playing like a Wilshere can play can makes us serious contenders next season.

Bought this for the Wii. Are they fucking serious? by ResidentAlienin FIFA12

[–]ResidentAlien[S] 1 point2 points ago

The graphics are pretty bad, but the Wii is more limited in terms of processing power and such, so I can accept it. But how can they excuse such glaring omissions/problems with the franchise mode?

I got the reference to the movie. The fifth element is a personal favorite. But what's the point of the Obama-style poster? Is it supposed to be clever/funny/whatever in some way I'm just not getting? Because it seems two popular but utterly unrelated elements got smashed together without anything at all to tie them together in any way that makes any sense or is worthy of being upvoted for any reason.

But I respect the subreddit enough that I assume there's something I'm missing

He was a great hitter, but he's not even in the argument for greatest of all time. He's got longevity but that's about it, if we're talking about all-time skills.

I don't understand how it would work if you didn't automatically treat anyone who shows up in an ER. If I show up unconscious and bleeding in an ER but I forgot my wallet in my other pants, they'd just let me die?

Not saying Friedman would approve of everything in Obamacare, but he did advocate for an individual mandate.
