Fact: Tom Waits has ZERO Platinum albums. Fact: The Backstreet Boys have 2 DIAMOND albums. Fact: America should feel bad. Well America, do you feel bad? by Platinum_Waits_FFSin Music

I am not America. I am but one man. I have a limit to my power. That power has been exercised to it's utmost to make this not so. I do not feel bad. I am not America.

Put the Jews behind electric fences, you say? Hmm... by larsdabneyin atheism

I don't believe in the right to live unmolested, if by that you mean "not upset". Someone will always be upset by something another person says, and there are many emotionally fragile people out there who can be seriously harmed psychologically by the most innocuous statements. I think it's more incumbent on them to grow thicker skin than it is for me to walk on their eggshells.

And if you're counting on a government, any government to devise "solid common sense and fair rules", then I say that you need to study history some more. I mean, it happens, but it never lasts very long.

I think there is a legitimate case to be made for where a person or group exercises their right to free speech, at least as far as public spaces. I don't think speech should be constrained in private. You should be able to gather in a group on your own property and talk about anything. As I understand it, the german anti-hate speech laws ban that. This is a quick response as I have things to do on the meat-side, so I haven't been able to look at the link provided. If, when I do, I'm wrong about the nature of german law, then I will apologize, while standing by my original contention.

I always get leery when someone says, "I'm all for free speech, but..."

Speech is powerful but in the end, it's only expressed thought. Banning any speech is akin to an attempt to ban thoughts and the free exchange of ideas. If you ban one idea then, before long, somebody says, "Well y'know, everybody knows that this other idea is abhorrent (except for a few freaks and weirdos)" Before you know it, expression of any idea not shared by the mainstream is against the law.

Are all of your ideas shared by the mainstream?

Better, I feel, to let the fools express themselves out loud and in public. Not only do we know where they are, then, but it also exposes people to idiots so that they're prepared for them when meeting them in the real world. I know that my daughter was exposed to many, many bigotted fools in her youth (on her mother's side, of course) and it only hardened her resolve to not be one of them.

Generally, I've found hockey players to be the most intelligent, reasonable, down-to-earth professional athletes in the country (maybe the world, but I can't speak to that.)

Shawn Thornton epitomizes that. What a great guy.

(By the time I finished writing that last sentence, I was doing it in Madelaine Kahn's voice.)

The other side, the land of Massholes.

I grew up in Cincinnati and now I can't believe I used to bitch about the drivers there. I actually wrote a letter to the editor of the local paper apologizing to all the people I flipped off while I was driving there. They didn't publish it, I guess because I spelled all the words correctly.

No sarcasm. Everyone should give driving their full attention at all times. So few do. You're one of the ones that I don't have to worry about, although I will because I drive under the assumption that every vehicle I see is about to do the stupidest thing posssible. Too often I'm right and so I'm prepared.

I guess perceived sarcasm accounts for the downvotes...

To say the FF were mostly christian means nothing. Bck then, almost everybody was a christian. It was very difficult to be anything else in that society at that time.

Red Skelton does a serious bit, analyzing the Pledge, and his version doesn't have "under god". It's on youtube, if only I weren't so lazy...

Rainbow Trout I caught last fall in MA by battmurnsin Fishing

[–]Quackenstein 5 points6 points ago

Actually, it's almost certainly a stocked fish and won't hold over until next year. MA doesn't have many lakes large and deep enough for Rainbows to survive the summer. There is no good reason not to clean this fish, wrap it in foil with some butter and garlic and throw it on the grill for about 5 minutes on each side.

That being said, just because it's not going to survive the summer is no reason to injure it.

EDIT summer/winter
