Not trying to be condesceding but I find it funny that your first instinct upon getting engaged was to post it on r/trees.

Excellent job! What major are you? I'm sure you've got a lot to look forward to right now

Looking for a book/textbook regarding the interactions between sub atomic particles, from protons, neutrons, and electrons down to the higgs boson particle. by Psycho67in askscience

Thank you! I suppose I'd have to read up on quantum mechanics too, seeing as I really only know the basics of that. Any recommendations?

Question for some of you by Psycho67in atheism

[–]Psycho67[S] 0 points1 point ago

My second question for you then is why take a pessimistic standpoint? Keep in mind that I believe it possible to believe in a god without any downsides, such as mandatory worship, restricting rules, etc.. althought it may be descrived as a superior "force" moreso than an actual "being"

[–]Psycho67[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I suppose you're right.. I don't know, I might never know, I guess some part of me just wants to believe and finds comfort in the idea that there is something else out there.

I just realized I jumped from pessimism to optimism... Looks like your comment had a profound effect lol.

Yes this is true, but two possibilities exist that would not allow technology and sciece to reach that point during our lifetimes. Situation A) the point in science and technology is simply too far off. Situation B) "big science" as I like to call it is not cheap, the LHC spans multiple countries and is really only an experiement to prove the existance of the higgs boson. If science continues to become "bigger," it will become outside of one nations reach to fund the project, and become a completely international effort. At some point, nations may start thinking that continuing research is economically unreasonable.

I do hope that we see science and technology advance to that point, and I don't doubt it will, but I feel as if economics may hinder the exponential growth of technology. Of course, I'm going to remain optimistic and keep my fingers crossed that we may see the day in our lifetimes.

I feel as if I chose to be athiest agnostic instead of theist agnostic, the exact same question could be asked of myself. Am I ignorant by choosing to be agnostic theist instead of agnostic atheist? Absolutely not, due to the fact that there is no solid evidence directly proving or disproving either.

Question for some of you by Psycho67in atheism

[–]Psycho67[S] 1 point2 points ago

Of course, although I do doubt such evidence would become available in my lifetime. Until then, I prefer to remain agnostic theist.

You can't prove that a god doesn't exist, therefore choosing to believe that a god doesn't exist is just as absurd from an engineer's standpoint as choosing to believe that god does exist.

[–]Psycho67[S] 0 points1 point ago

Nice to meet you too! I suppose we are a rare type of individual. In fact, I'm not completely agnostic theist, but I am agnostic theist at the moment. I believe as science progresses, there may become a way to prove the existance of god.. whether or not that day will come in our lifetimes is anyone's call.

I really do appreciate your response as it is not a biased, atheist charged response.

As for actually worrying about it, I rarely worry about it. I trust that if there is a heaven, and a god as christians believe there is, he will understand my doubt and accept me into the afterlife as a good person. If not, I'll die a sack of cells and science will do as it will with my body.

Being a chemical engineer, I can assure you.. that is not the case for myself :)

Question for some of you by Psycho67in atheism

[–]Psycho67[S] 1 point2 points ago

By choosing to be atheist you want there to not be a god.. ie, you choose to believe that god doesn't exist despite the lack of scientific evidence directly confirming the hypothesis that god does not exist. There is as much direct evidence saying that god does exist as there is direct evidence saying god doesn't exist. Don't get me wrong, there's an outstanding amount of evidence that god doesn't exist as most organized religion says it does, but to say there is no supreme being at any level is just as absurd as saying that there is a supreme being at some far off unacknowledged level.

Help me out Ents, I have a knee surgery tomorrow and I need the medical benefits of marijuana in an attempt to get my med card (please read) by Psycho67in trees

[–]Psycho67[S] 0 points1 point ago

I agree with you. Yet it is worth asking, it's a legitimate reason for the medical card as opposed to the hundreds of teenagers that lie about the need for medication and get a medical card anyway.
