VLC hits a billion downloads by kierankin technology

I love mpc, but man their UI is pretty wretched. I remember having to figure out their multifold subtitle options many years ago.

I started using CCC (Combined Community Codec) about 7(?) years ago and I have since forgotten codecs exist until I upgrade computers. Given, I've also been streaming nearly all my media for the past year or two, so maybe it won't play some of the wacky new formats I haven't been exposed to.

Depends on how much navigation is required. I can blind type on any part of the keyboard for a short period, but I generally look back and forth to maintain my orientation since my hand is always hovering.

A lot of it is number entry anyway and the num-pad is one handed. Had I been seriously impeded by my lack I would have learned, but the way I type is more comfortable and not much slower than normal.

I do 45 wpm 1 handed typing. It's not a necessity to be able to touch type if you still have enough accuracy and speed without it, though I don't doubt it a very useful skill to have. For reference I administrate a web application and do data entry (mainly).

Researchers have found that smokers are more likely to stop because of anti-social attitudes towards them than from fear of ill-health. by DrJulianBashirin science

There are courteous smokers. I'm a courteous smoker. I swear I try to look guilty every time I pass a baby carriage.

Funny anecdote, I once saw an old lady at a cross walk ash her cigarette on a baby carriage, it was absolutely despicable. I think that was the moment I truly understood New York City.

Being anti-social and socially inept aren't the same at all; I'm actually more anti-social after becoming socially adept because I found that I hated people more the more I got to know them.

When you become truly anti-social you'll realize there's no such thing as social ineptness, just that everyone else is a fucking idiot./pissing contest

Depends on where you live. If you're in a city the nasty looks and passive-aggressive coughs as people pass start to get to you, especially if you're anti-social. The funny part is I have an e-cigarette which is really helpful, but whenever I smoke it in public people start talking to me, so I don't smoke it outside anymore.

It's called 'tool usage' and it's the reason humans have triumphed thus far. We create better tools to handle tasks so we don't need to expend energy on them; thus not learning/utilizing outdated methods or remembering information which can be easily looked up is an advantage.

Paraphrasing an(assumed) Einstein quote, 'Don't bother to remember anything you could look up.'. These days the greatest advantage a person can possess in most any situation is the ability to competently utilize a search engine. I think we should be stressing the younger generations to further adapt to technology rather than learning old methodology. You're much better off learning how to use a calculator than learning long division.

Thanks for saying that. The fact that Google is offering the option in a clear and convenient way means I'm going to leave it on; comparatively speaking they're the good guys, and I'd like to help keep their business model viable.

A little kitty cures anything.

But seriously, this is great. Depression hasn't had any truly effective treatments to date, if this proves successful it'll be a saving grace for a significant portion of the population, myself included.

How Googles New Privacy Policy Could Affect You by ttruth1in technology

[–]PonPeriPon 7 points8 points ago

Anyone else more interested than disturbed by this? I find what Google is doing fascinating and look forward to how far this technology progresses in 5-10 years. They're being open with what they're doing, and they do give you options to control how it's being used, which hopefully will be expanded with the new policy.
