I'm actually working on a short story about my next character but it's getting up near 5000 words. So here's the first part.

Kanek-i sat on the ridge far above Elinhir and watched the shadow of the mountains grow shorter over the land of her childhood. When she was younger she never much cared to enter the town itself when the women journeyed there to trade, preferring instead to stay with the herd and help with the milking, slaughtering, and smithing. Back in those days her younger brother delighted in chasing a single sheep away from the flock just so he could watch Kanek-i track it down and return it, scolding him all the way. Her scolding was half serious and half in jest, for she enjoyed every chance she got to put her natural tracking abilities to use.

It was another person, another life, she thought to herself. These days she still only entered cities and towns when she absolutely had to, and usually only under cover of night. The people and buildings made her feel paranoid, trapped. The sun was rising over The Reach and it was time to leave her homeland once again. She was again bored with Hammerfell like she had grown bored with Cyrodiil months ago. Contracts became harder to come by around the Imperial City even with the ever-increasing Thalmor presence -- strange, as Kanek-i figured there would be plenty of people who would wish those damned elves dead. She wasn’t sure if the people had grown weary or complacent under the White-Gold Concordat. But her contacts in Cyrodiil or Hammerfell hadn’t sent word in too long, and even Astrid, the leader of what was left of the Dark Brotherhood, hadn’t required her services in weeks. She grew tired of pickpocketing septims in Elinhir and decided to look for “legitimate” work amongst the Nords of Skyrim.

She wasn’t sure how Astrid would feel about her working in Skyrim. To her knowledge the Dark Brotherhood had never outwardly claimed it as their sole territory. It was usually easy enough to find people who required her services but didn’t want to bother with the silly Black Sacrament. Let the Dark Brotherhood keep their rituals and superstitions. Astrid knew who to call on when only the best and most discreet assassin was necessary. And she never pressured Kanek-i into joining her “family.”

Kanek-i had taken contracts in Skyrim before, mostly in The Reach. A wizard who wooed a lady away from some blacksmith, a Khajit with sticky fingers outside of Dragon Bridge, a Forsworn Briarheart whose tribe had crossed the wrong noble. And a bandit leader who had kidnapped a child for ransom. She had killed him slowly, and with great pleasure, as she had once before.

Kanek-i paused and squeezed her eyes shut at the thought of the bandit. It was a familiar story with a much more satisfying ending than the one in her past. This time the child was returned to his parents unharmed. But her brother....

She moved faster over the rocks and down the mountain.

I don't have anything specific because I usually just kind of mash a few online recipes together, but I would be inclined to go for one with a rum sauce.

Try using them in a bread pudding.

Dear Star Trib, how do I opt out of your weekly littering campaign? by Capissen38in twincitiessocial

What makes me rage the most is that I have already unsubscribed from Twin Cities Values and this week they decided I was un-unsubscribed.

Look on the first couple of pages of the spam in your mailbox. There's usually a way to stop it for a little while at least.

r/Minnesota, I'm working in the BWCA all summer! What should I know/What are your stories and experiences from up there? by wmu212in minnesota

[–]PikaPikaChick 1 point2 points ago*

It may just be me, but the idea of paddling around with big jugs of water (1 gallon/person/day) and having to portage that with the rest of my stuff just doesn't sound appealing. If you have the means I would highly recommend a hand pumped water filter like this. Boiling is fine but it sucks when you're thirsty and have to wait for the water to cool down. Not to mention the random particulates.

Edit to add that if you're planning on camping out, make your campsite reservation ASAP. It gets really busy up there, especially on the Gunflint side, and you absolutely have to have a permit to be in a campsite. Believe me, they're checking all the time. Here was my personal experience last year if you're interested.

Adopting a dog this week, anyone have some dog supplies they aren't using? by JuanJuallin twincitiessocial

[–]PikaPikaChick 1 point2 points ago

The muzzle is smallish and one of those soft nylon types. I doubt it would fit our puggle now. The bowls probably fit 2-3 cups of dog food. Everything is free because it's all just gathering dust but we'd also accept a six-pack. :) I was trying to take a picture last night but couldn't find my camera. Shoot me a PM if you would like any or all of it.

Indeed! We got a bunch of stuff from our last adopted dog that we don't use:

  • 2 bowls
  • 1 rubber tug-of-war toy
  • 1 muzzle (!)
  • full bottle of shampoo
  • 6' nylon leash
  • one of those reel leashes
  • 2 shock collars and battery (!)
  • multiple bandanas
  • small harness

Minnesota. Maybe it's a weird Scandihoovian thing?

Might be a US thing. Wedding guests pay cash (typically $1, often more) to dance for a short time with the bride and/or groom.

We couldn't escape our large families so we ended up doing a small, intimate ceremony at a Japanese garden that only allowed a max of 50 guests, then followed with a reception for everyone. Our wedding party was all siblings. My biggest fear was the part where the wedding party does speeches. I told everyone that they absolutely didn't have to give a speech unless they REALLY wanted to and skipped it myself.

The dancing, particularly the dollar dance, was tough for me but I muddled through.

Otherwise it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. It's amazing how happy and carefree wedding guests can be when you've got an open bar.
