What should I read next? (Single protagonist, fantasy, romance subplot) by xeboin Fantasy

[–]Phydeaux 1 point2 points ago

Chiming in with the obligatory Mistborn Trilogy, it fits all your criteria.

Name of the Wind also comes to mind.

My review of the Mistborn trilogy. Comments and feedback greatly appreciated, Redditors! by Kalysiain Fantasy

[–]Phydeaux 1 point2 points ago

I will agree that Mistborn is the sort of series that can pull the most jaded mainstream reader into the fantasy genre. Sanderson has a writing style that can appeal to the masses, his character and plot development are spot on.

The comment you made about Vin being "mentally disturbed" sort of threw me. As I read the series, my perception was more of a girl who was simply a product of her environment - a desperate-yet-clever child of the streets. Always watching her back, keeping her head low when necessary, and wary or everyone. She did a lot of growing up in those three books, and Sanderson portrayed it wonderfully.

You asked at the end of your review how Sanderson's works compare with Robert Jordan's. As a reader who tried desperately to like WoT, but ultimately abandoned the endeavor around book six, I feel there is very little compare. Where Jordan is meandering and tedious, Sanderson is focused and engaging. By the time I quit reading WoT I was fully convinced Jordan had, for all intents and purposes, given up on trying to create a cohesive body of work (reviews I've read of Sanderson's work on finishing the series implies he's done an amazing job of tying things up). I'm sure there are readers out there who enjoy them both, but I doubt it's for the same reasons. Whether or not one is willing to read the entire series, simply because they're a Sanderson fan, is up to the individual, (I wasn't able to do it).

*Your mileage may vary.

After a very long break from fantasy (20+ years) I've recently rediscovered the passion I had for it when I was young, thanks to Peter Brett, Patrick Rothfuss and Brent Weeks. Can anyone recommend an author I might try next? by TroyPDXin Fantasy

[–]Phydeaux 1 point2 points ago

Your girlfriend is mistaken. The only connection between Sanderson and Jordan is that Sanderson successfully wrapped up WoT which had been dying a slow, painful death.

Pick up the first book of the Mistborn trilogy, you won't be disappointed. Character development and plot progression is spot on. Also one of the most satisfying conclusions of any trilogy I've read, with none of the typical loose ends you're used to seeing in many series'.

Considering the subject of this post, I think the comment was written as intended.

Unicorns don't exist, hence impossible. However, if written within the proper context of a story, the notion of one flying through your window may be entirely plausible.

Brent Weeks will be joining the r/Fantasy Book Club tomorrow May 15th at 7pm central to discuss The Way of Shadows, The Night Angel Trilogy and to answer any other questions you have. by gunslingersin Fantasy

Another recommendation for The Dresden Files. Fast-paced, quick reads, and a fun, refreshing break from the norm.
