It's minor. Slightly measurable - like you might knock half a second off your 5K run time. I was prescribed it, and it did provide that minor assist, but ultimately wasn't what holds me back. Sport-induced pleuritis is - somewhat rare but not asthma. The lung gets inflamed on the outside for me, and swells. Thereby causing pain and reduction in total capacity. Biking and sport less jarring cause me far less issue. I could ride 50 miles straight at a decent pace at one point, but only run 3.5.

He basically distilled the seed himself from windblown seed:

As established in the original Federal Court trial decision, Schmeiser first discovered Roundup-resistant canola in his crops in 1997.[2] He had used Roundup herbicide to clear weeds around power poles and in ditches adjacent to a public road running beside one of his fields, and noticed that some of the canola which had been sprayed had survived. Schmeiser then performed a test by applying Roundup to an additional 3 acres (12,000 m2) to 4 acres (16,000 m2) of the same field. He found that 60% of the canola plants survived. At harvest time, Schmeiser instructed a farmhand to harvest the test field. That seed was stored separately from the rest of the harvest, and used the next year to seed approximately 1,000 acres (4 km²) of canola.

So if one windblown Monsanto seed lands on my property, and I cultivate it into acres of plants over several years, I am now a huge criminal? No. Either I should sue Monsanto for trespass, or it is a case of ownership being 9/10ths and Monsanto can only cry about it if I sell the seed to other farmers. I did, after all come by it through natural means. The court decision says otherwise, that it doesn't matter how it was obtained.

Overriding the rights of the physical property owner for the protection of the intellectual property owner is the explicit purpose of the Patent Act.[citation needed] As property rights are not constitutional rights they do not override statutes such as the Patent Act.

So there you have it. If Monsanto made glyphosphate resistant wildflowers, and those plants grew on your property in Canada (or the US) via windblown/bird/insect/etc, you are in violation of patent even though you did nothing at all.

edit: Note that the genes themselves are patented. So if the glyphosphate gene cross-pollinates intentionally or accidentally, those plants are now property of Monsanto. The patent is viral.

Not easy to be contaminated!? Look, you don't even have to be a farmer, just live in farming country. There are MILLIONS of oats, wheat, crimson clover plants all over the sides of the roads and along fields that absolutely with no question blew there either from other fields or from trucks hauling harvested seed. Wheat and oats have NEVER been farmed on my property, and yet windblown/bird carried/?? seeds I often have wheat come up in small patches. The nearest wheat field is a mile away. All the grains are notorious for winding up where they weren't planted. And they (glyphosphate resistant) won't die from Round-Up. It's a real problem for the grass seed farmers and other crop farmers around here.

Why do you have this notion that plants stay put? They absolutely don't.

Your idea is that if I buy 1 Monsanto Sunflower seed with patented genetics, I must ensure 100% destruction of all the hundreds of resulting seeds from that plant. To include prevention of bird scattering, wind, and cross pollination of patented genetics. And that if I collect the seeds and save even 1 of them and plant that seed the next year, I have broken the law. That is absurd.

No conceivable way except for the long road and the poorly tarped seed trucks that drove by the specific sites.

There is no claim one way or the other about the seed because the man had been saving seed from crops and replanting them for decades. Because, you see, this is exactly how farming was done for thousands of years.

Well, there is plenty of precedence when it comes to shabby studies done and funded by the companies wanting to profit from a product. Bayer has a lovely reputation, for example. And it was Bayer's systemic pesticide that was proven to cause serious "sub lethal" effects on bees leading to its ban (on systemic insecticide coated seed) in many countries. It's not a great leap to suggest that toxin laced pollen could cause problems, particularly for insects that consume pollen as part of their diet. If Bt or the toxins produced by it are so safe for Bees, then one wonders why it isn't being actively used in bee hives to control the various parasites and other nasties that want in.

Maybe it's because it has been linked with weakened immune systems in the bees

What effect does Bt endotoxin have on larval bees? On adult bees? Zero impact or maybe just slightly decreased immune response? Well if you tally up all the other things showing up in honey and bee pollen, you get quite a few things that apparently screw up bees. But wait! We said it was safe for bees. At first. Maybe humans aren't going to keel over from ingesting Bt spores, but what about continuous intake of Bt endotoxins over extended periods of time? Would it be so shocking that this turned out to be "sub optimal"?

The Court ruled that Schmeiser deprived Monsanto of its monopoly on the special canola plant by storing and planting the Roundup Ready canola seeds pursuant to his commercial interests. Thus, Schmeiser is considered to have infringed section 42 of the Patent Act. The Court, however, disagreed with the damages given by the trial judge as there was no profit directly resulting from the invention itself.

Since when is planting something, harvesting the seed from it, and selling that seed a crime so long as you purchased the original seed? That's ludicrous. That is the essence of farming itself. That "crime" is called thrifty pragmatism.

It's not a monopoly, but the largest stake. And there is no denying that Monsanto bought up hundreds of seed companies to ensure market dominance, and has certainly engaged in legal assaults on farmers.

The Canadian court did NOT accept that the guy "stole" the crop, just that by Canadian law, having the presence of genes on your property was considered theft regardless of how it got there! To include birds, cross-pollination by wind, etc. Go read the decision if you don't believe me. Which is exactly why people are so pissed.

It is "theft" to buy the seed, plant it, and then use the seed from the resulting plants if it contains patented genes.

Maybe wrong. Sub-lethal to individual beneficial insects, but can ultimately lead to the ruin of colonial insects. Bees have been shown to be negatively impacted by Bt laced pollen. The plant is producing Bt toxin systemically, and at levels 300-500 times more than the Bt surface sprays that were previously used. Not enough is known about what happens when humans, from babies to adults, consume significant quantities of Bt over long periods of time. Nor whether or not beneficial insects as well as the predators of those insects aren't impacted in ways not previously anticipated or desired. edit: There's Bt in the pollen - and that can have potential allergy impacts too. Edit2: added the preface "Maybe" to the beginning. More independent research is warranted.

I only did alcohol and nicotine, but this seems like wise advice. We didn't drink and drive. Some friends smoked weed, but not around people who didn't want to partake.

Condoms. They work. Also, the pill. The pill, however, can have undesirable side effects and ruin your sex life worse than dealing with condoms.

It doesn't make sense for Dimon to continue to be CEO, and chances are fair he won't be. He admitted to being "dead wrong" when he recently spoke of how great his company was doing, only to have to explain about suddenly being way in the hole. The guy has zero credibility based on his own statements and you think it pandering to suggest that maybe this guy shouldn't be on the board?

You appear to be fully ignorant of her lengthy research career, and papers published. I suggest you ask yourself why it is people call her an expert on financial regulation, when she appears to be schooled as a lawyer. The answer is easy - she spent an incredible amount of time studying the system.

Here's the only quote I've found thus far

We now live in a world in which we're trying to recover from the greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression. And we just learned today that JP Morgan Chase lost two billion dollars in reckless trading, and yet at the same moment they are trying to argue that we need to undercut financial reforms before they're ever put in place.

I want to make clear my position on this. I believe we need a strong cop on the beat to make sure no one steals your purse on main street or your pension on Wall Street. That's where we need to be.

May 11th 2012

edit: so based on her quote, how is she wrong?
