Lands' End Canvas now carries Oak Street shoes - closer and closer to J.Crew's business model by jdbeein malefashionadvice

[–]Paiev 2 points3 points ago

I just put in an order for the trail oxford, which I've been vaguely lusting after for several months now. I doubt it'll go through, though, based on an official post on the OSB affiliate thread on SF:

LE Canvas wasn't supposed to put these up just yet - but those crepe soles look fantanstic =) Their price and ship date isn't correct, AND Oak Street is excluded from all sales. They already removed the ability to order, but will be available soon when pre-order ship date is solidified, and price is correct

I'm also really curious about this, it doesn't make sense to me either. What's the justification for overturning the law? The article doesn't really say.

Advice for an American student? by antimatterLegoin oxford

[–]Paiev 0 points1 point ago

I'm an American student finishing up my first year as an undergraduate and everything thorva said has entirely on point compared to my experience so far. The one thing I would comment on is this: "(IB exams are better than AP exams are better than the ACT is better than the SAT)", which is misleading. If you do the IB, that will be your main qualification when you apply; if you don't, you will need 5s on several APs and either the ACT or SAT. It doesn't make sense to say AP > ACT > SAT.

Regarding interviews, the comment below is a good explanation, I think.

If you have any questions, especially about the admissions process, which I like to think I have quite a firm grasp on, please also feel free to PM me (or ask them here).

Indeed: about 50% of MFA is students, according to the census.

I want to know if anyone else owns a tuxedo, really.

Well, that's easy enough: I do (only one)! I think we are probably the 1%, though, given MFA's young userbase. I agree that it's a nice question.

I think the shopping for clothes question needs a better set of responses- I bet most MFA users go shopping somewhere between 0 and 1 times per week. Maybe how many times per fortnight or per month would be better.

A bit over two months, I think, though I've probably only worn them about a dozen times or so. Haven't treated them with anything yet, I probably will eventually.

No, they're not relaxed- it's the awkward hands in the pockets that's screwing with the shoulders/posture :P

Thanks.

Wearing it well even though your photo pose is a bit awk.

You should have seen some of the pictures that were rejected before I arrived at this one :P I am awful at posing.

Edit: just for kicks, here's one of said pictures.

Standard day as a freshman. If there is such a thing as a "MFA uniform", this is probably it. I finally started lifting and eating on Friday, so with any luck none of this will fit me in a few months.

2012 MFA Census by shujinin malefashionadvice

There were about 3000 responses to the sex question vs about 2500 responses to the penis question. Also, some people could be trans. BOOM, science!

As Arcs_Of_A_Jar nodded to, you should just lose the tie entirely. It'll look better.

Smile, boys! by goose90proofin malefashionadvice

This is malefashionadvice, not malefacialexpressionadvice. I find criticisms of people's smiling (or lack thereof) to be vapid and useless.

MFA Census 2012 by shujinin malefashionadvice

I mentioned this in IRC, but I might as well post here: it would have been more LGBTQ-friendly to add at least an "other" option under sexuality, to include those who identify as pansexual, questioning, or anything else. The sexuality question as it is is very much influenced by a perceived gender binary. Unfortunately it's too late now.

I'm 6ft7in and my job means my weight fluctuates often! Help please! by crankdantin malefashionadvice

[–]Paiev -2 points-1 points ago

If you are taking in fewer calories than you are spending, you will lose weight. Period. Calories are a measurement of energy, and if the energy your body is using isn't coming from your food, it has to come from stored energy (i.e. fat). This is a simple consequence of the conservation of energy, a physical law.

The inverse- that if you take in more calories than you spend, you will gain weight- isn't necessarily always true: you could imagine a hypothetical person who just excreted all excess calories without storing any, or even someone who used stored energy before food energy, causing them to actually lose weight. But taking in fewer calories than you expend requires that your body burn fat. It's just simple physics.

Some colors after a deeply alcoholic May Day celebration last night.

Hope you guys enjoyed the meetup at GDs and Oxford Blue last night! We're doing pub quiz at the blue tomorrow - how would you feel about putting a team together? by chrisv650in oxford

[–]Paiev 0 points1 point ago

I'm up for it if other people are, though as a student I'm planning on going out tomorrow night for May Day, so I wouldn't hang around for too long afterwards.

Tell me about Teddy Hall by _-browntown-_in oxforduni

[–]Paiev 1 point2 points ago

It looks like you're an American? I'm an American in my first year, though not at Teddy Hall. If you have any (non-Teddy Hall-specific) questions before you come over, feel free to shoot me a PM. I might not respond immediately in the next couple days, though, as I'm a bit swamped with work at the moment.
