Infographic: Bayern VS Chelsea: Can Chelsea Overcome The Odds in Munich? by sebastiaan78in soccer

Am I reading it wrong or is there a mistake? It says Chelsea made it to the final last year.

All of that aside, great infographic. I've waited 11 years for another day that would become one of the most memorable of my life.

JERSEY GIVEAWAY: Predict the UCL final! by EleteTSCin soccer

[–]NeonBlueHair 1 point2 points ago

Bayern 2 - 0 Chelsea

Ribery (25)

Gomez (78)

MotM: Ribery

Just a heads up for everybody else that's predicting:

given all of Bayern's bans, the likely change in lineup is as follows:

Tymoschuk as CB and Rafinha as fullback (replacing Alaba). Kroos and Schweinsteiger being in the center, and Muller playing as CAM, where Kroos was playing the past few games.

Hope this helps with your predications!

EDIT: So basically, Muller is very likely to start, while Kroos will be playing further back than usual. (just my guess based on previous lineups)

There's some Coachella-specific ones on the App-Store. The rest are general ones.

Thanks man! I'm glad you like the idea!

I agree with the map analogy for games. It's funny cause this app is kinda like the in-game alternative to those maps as well, which are those simple circular navigators you find in HALO and many other FPS games that just give you your opponents direction on the edge until you get close.

We have a lot of plans for it. Right now, the next big thing we'll work on will be the database. It's a pretty crucial part of the app, and right now it's too simple and bare. We need to add username capabilities, review systems (know the good maps from the crappy ones), search, and so on.

For the step-by-step directions, I'll point you to the last paragraph in my above response to markisonfire!

In the future, we plan on adding the capability to find moving target as well - like your friends - so it will be even more useful in the settings that we intend it for, like music festivals and college campuses.

Sorry for the delay in response, the three of us were at Coachella, rockin out in the desert and testing out our app :)

I'm not sure I completely understand the point you made about the mall situation, but let me try: So it's not that you want it to give you directions within the mall ( point to end of the hall, then out the door, etc.), but rather allow you to mark which destinations you want to go to, and then point to them in order? i.e: points to Discovery Channel Store first, then when you get there, points to Brookstone, then from there to Starbucks, and so on.

Even if its a narrow example, if it can help a few people, then its worth considering. Especially since malls are another of the ideal situations we had in mind when we did this.

Well, the most fundamental restraint is the compass. The phones come with a built-in hardware compass, and there's pretty much nothing our app can do to improve the compass readings. That's also the reason we went with iPhone first instead of Android.

Another is that sometimes GPS just isn't that accurate, particularly when indoors. This weekend at Coachella it would take literally 2 seconds for it to completely pinpoint where the user was and give accurate info, but it won't be as fast in a mall or other similar setting. Fortunately, geolocation gets better with pretty much every new phone (the 4S added GLONASS support, which is the Russian satellite system equivalent of GPS) and I'm sure they'll continue improving it.

This one isn't really a technological one as much as a structural one: sometimes people ask if we can make it become more like step-by-step directions, so that it could guide you around the occasional barrier that might be in your way. Since our destination location data is all user-generated and our google maps views can't be used for directions, we're not sure how that would be possible, or if we wanna attempt it at all. It seems to go against the general idea/appeal of the app, which is its simplicity, as well as trust that the user is smart enough to figure out small details as long as they have a good idea where they are with respect to their destination.

We started late September, when we were annoyed that such an app didn't exist, and so decided to make one ourselves.

To address all the things that you mentioned in your comment:

  • We tried it on an HTC Inspire, HTC EVO, and two others (don't remember exactly what models) and the compass kept getting interference and was very twitchy. Like I mentioned before, I'm sure there are other phones that have good compasses, but our sample data told us that we should go with the system where we don't have to worry about hardware.

  • When we started, Android already had a bigger market share

  • Sounds like you're suggesting that we should have limited our Android app to only some Android phones. I don't think people in the Android community would be happy about that. We tried different methods of working around that - such as using the direction of movement of the user instead of the compass - but none worked well. Maybe you're just a much better programmer than us (a very real possibility, considering how none of us are professional programmers). But we couldn't come up with a way to take in incorrect data and make it correct without a second reference point. If you do know how to do this (and I mean specifically, not "adding an 'if' statement or two"), we'd appreciate it if you could let us know so that we can include it in the Android app.

  • There's really no one "in charge" of this project as we're equal three co-founders. But I'm the one who started it and who made the final decision to go with the iPhone, so I guess you can direct your criticism at me. No, I wasn't concerned about "coding something cool". I was annoyed that something like this didn't exist, and didn't like how other people had attempted it before, so I figured we'd do it ourselves and do it better.

  • I'm not sure what you mean by " flashy compass features ". We have a back-end that supports maps created by users, and allows them to share and download them, which is what we use to overcome the issue of temporary destinations such as stages in a music festival (or where you parked your car), or unmarked ones such as places on a hiking trail. It's a big part of our app. You should check it out if you get the chance.

  • I'm sorry to hear you find it useless. We've had a lot of feedback from people who've loved it and found it useful, so if you have any suggestions on how to improve what we have (besides switching to Android :) ), we'd be happy to hear them.

  • I have to make something clear: This is NOT a "Coachella app". This is a navigation app. We are directing it at Coachella people right now because that's a place where it would be very useful, and cause all three of us are big fans of the show and are going there. This is something that can be used by anyone, at any place, and not just Coachella.

  • To add to my point above: We are not contracted by Goldenvoice, and we are not a Coachella app. We are not payed by anyone, and have made absolutely no money on this project. This isn't some conspiracy to keep Android users out of the market. We are three friends who decided to make something that we ourselves would like to use. Along the way, we were met with a lot of enthusiasm, so the project got bigger and more ambitious. If you have complaints about Goldenvoice, send them an email. We are not in anyway connected to them.

  • In the end, even though I feel like you misunderstood our intentions, I still appreciate you taking the time to write out your issues and frustrations about the app. Any feedback is always better than no feedback. If you have any more questions or comments, please feel free to voice them here, or at our contact email.

Thanks,

Ali

I'm curious to know what exactly you consider this hole to be. When we initially thought about this app, it was along the lines of "with all these current navigation apps in the market, what do we do if we're not restricted to all these roads, like when we're walking?"

[–]NeonBlueHair[S] 1 point2 points ago

That's actually a fantastic idea. We thought about something similar initially when we were thinking about making an app focused solely on music festivals. However, after switching to a general navigation app, we decided to drop it and focus on a broader appeal, and on our approach to navigation. But I hope someone else incorporates that in to a music festival app so I can use it too :)

Hi s1ncere,

I'm one of the developers of this app. When the three of us started on this project, we were all Android owners so we really wanted to release it for Android first. The main reason we decided to go with the iPhone was that this app relies very heavily on the built-in compass, and we knew for a fact that the iPhone compass works well. We couldn't same the same for Android though, as we tried on each of our phones and none of them worked properly. Now I'm sure some other Android phones do have great compasses, but we just couldn't take the risk of having a large chunk of our users be unhappy due to the limitations of their phone. We really hope to release it for Android at some point too, but this was the reason we chose to go iPhone first.

Lukas Podolski in Arsenal! Does this mean Van Persie is leaving? by KingSasoin soccer

yup. Now VP wont be the only person scoring for ARsenal. Podolski is actually a very good choice, since he might not make a very good target man, but he's fantastic as the second striker that plays just slightly behind the main guy, and both feeds him AND scores himself. Look at him and Klose's combo for the German National Team (2010 WC) to get an idea

Couldnt have said it better. They could have easily just changed Riddick's name, and taken away the eyes, and I would just be indifferent to Chronicles (still wouldnt like it). But to connect it to Pitch Black as a sequel is what bugs me (and others like yourself) so much.

[–]NeonBlueHair 1 point2 points ago

hahaha yes I totally agree. I guess the reason I "hated" it is because of it being a sequel to Pitch Black. If this was a standalone movie I wouldnt have liked it, but wouldnt have hated it either. I would just be indifferent to it. But to take Riddick out of Pitch Black and put it in such a generic setting, it just felt like an insult to one of my favorite movies. Hence the strong feelings.

[–]NeonBlueHair 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one who absolutely hated Chronicles for taking everything fantastic about Pitch Black and shitting all over it? Pitch Black was a great movie with layered, non-cliche characters in a mysterious setting and an original plotline. And it was minimalistic (by sci-fi standards), making it that much better. Then they went ahead and made Chronicles which just had Riddick, plus all the sci-fi cliches they could get their hands on including: weird dystopian prisons, emotionless (hot) female anti-hero, and people with weird hair and clothes. I really home this is gonna be more similar to Pitch Black.
