Weekly Episode Discussion #14 - Pyramids of Mars - The Fourth Doctor. (Tom Baker) by IzzySawickiin gallifrey

[–]NJBiblio 1 point2 points ago

I was referring to Tennant's darker moods, and what always struck me as the "Woe is me, I'm the last of the Time Lords." attitude he had. He was a little too emo for my tastes. I don't mind seeing the darker side of the Doctor -- which is one reason why I really loved, and still do love, Seven near the end of his run (Remembrance of the Daleks, Ghost Light, Curse of Fenric). You get to see that he's really not the happy-go-lucky traveler all the time and that there is something much deeper to his personality, life, and place in the universe.

Which Classic Who monsters / villains would you like to see return in the new series? by wistyin gallifrey

[–]NJBiblio 0 points1 point ago

They come back in one of the Missing Adventure novels, The Sands of Time with Five. There is an implication there that the Egyptian gods are aliens from Mars (similar to the original Stargate movie, IIRC). I know that same "History Channel" show and they would eat that up :) There have been implications around too that the Greek & Roman gods were also aliens.

I was the same way. I thought if anyone could bring the Time Lords back with flair it would be Gaiman!

To have any of the other renegade Time Lords back would fill me with so much fanboy glee that I would pop. Otherwise, from the old school baddies that we haven't seen return, I would love to see the Ice Warriors, Sea Devils, and coming off the Pyramids of Mars discussion the Osirans back.

Of course, I am still holding out for The Terrible Zodin!

I don't rank this one as my top story, but it is up there for me. I think that the concept is brilliant, and I frankly like the "darker" Doctor you see here. This is a man who's seen and been through more than we can imagine, so he's entitled to his sullen moments. I absolutely love the "I know you're a Time Lord..." exchange because in a nutshell it captures this little lament, but doesn't harp on it for very long (or seasons on end -- yes, I'm looking at you David Tennant!)

The Doctor is a bit of an ass in this one, but he needs to be to get the job done. There is no time to waste trying to bring everyone up to speed, and most of them are dead halfway through the story anyway :) Sutekh is a fantastic baddie, and I would have loved to see more of him and the Osirians (though they did appear in a later Missing Adventure).

Cheesy special effects and giant robot mummies only add to the fun and remind you of the sometimes campy nature of the classic series, but the writing often makes up for it -- great one liners, a nice hat-tip to an often forgotten companion and an insightful exchange into the Doctor's character are worth a peek at least.

Lack of Discussion for this week's episode? by tubabaconin gallifrey

Great episode, but I had a busy week and didn't get a chance to re-watch it to have it fresh in the mind for discussion.

Signifigance of The Doctors dislike of Violence and Guns. by Raystonin gallifrey

[–]NJBiblio 4 points5 points ago

Add to that the fact that touching the wires would make the Doctor no better than the Daleks themselves. This is one of the best segments from Who and poses very long lasting and deep philosophical questions.

Signifigance of The Doctors dislike of Violence and Guns. by Raystonin gallifrey

[–]NJBiblio 3 points4 points ago

From a real world point of view, when this fact came to light in the classic series, it was the mid to late 1960s - early 1970s. At the time the broader peace movement was sweeping the world, and it could have also been a subtle political statement that out and out violence and gunplay was not a reasonable solution to solving conflict. Did the Doctor use indirect violence and even cause death? That's undeniable. However if you look at the context of the deaths inflicted it's fighting an imminent threat to life and/or freedoms and is therefore deemed "necessary".

He's no Thoreau or Gandhi, but the Doctor was always more about using his wits to outsmart (or out gadget) the enemies and get out of a situation with as little violence as possible. This is one of the things I do not like about the new series is that in a way they have strayed from this -- both in the use of violence and the OVER use and reliance on the sonic screwdriver now.

What do you guys think of Closet Whovians? by pcjonathanin gallifrey

[–]NJBiblio 2 points3 points ago

No, and I do the same. My point was more about the aggressive fans (of anything). When that starts, I feel like I am being preached or proselytized to, and that's where I have to draw a line.

[–]NJBiblio 2 points3 points ago

This is how I am now, but I don't openly broadcast it or try to "convert" or force it on people either. I'm not like that with anything because I also respect other people and their tastes as well. I also expect them to respect mine and not force their likes/dislikes or beliefs on me at the same time. I gained that over the years and the ability to tell them to stuff it if I'm not comfortable with their reactions.

[–]NJBiblio 2 points3 points ago

Nothing if you are a fan, but there is a stigma that WAS attached to it, especially in the 80s and 90s when I had to face the music, so to speak. Times have changed in many ways... both in peoples' tolerance and the quality and likability of the show, so many new fans have none of these issues.

[–]NJBiblio 5 points6 points ago

There was once this uber-stigma and nerd target on your back for loving Doctor Who. I come from a time when such things got you ridiculously mocked and/or an ass kicking in school if you mentioned this. Look back and see how a non-fan would view a show with such horrid special effects, accents they couldn't understand, and on PBS for Pete's sake. This made you keep it quiet and "in the closet" when I grew up....unless you were the kid who didn't give a crap and had his mom sew question marks on all his lapels!! :)

I think that this "closet" fandom stuck with me throughout the years...partially because of the experiences I had in the past, partly because for the longest time it was easy to keep on the DL because the only way I was able to view it was either at home on DVD or experience it through books, and finally because I am not one to really geek out about a television show -- dressing up and buying toys -- no matter how much I love it.

Just a Thought. Sorry if someone already posted about it. by darbymartin gallifrey

Outpost Skaro is blocked here at work, so I can't see the date of this article/interview. Often times in the early show, however, the Doctor referred to "his planet" and "his people" which were later given the names of Time Lords and Gallifrey in The War Games and The Time Warrior, respectively. They had probably taken that basic idea and story from early on and have obviously drastically elaborated on it over the years.

Aside from the Time Lord-centric episodes that were scattered throughout Pertwee through C. Baker's runs his origin and story were not even talked about, and even in those only briefly. It wasn't until McCoy and Cartmel as script editor that his origins and reasons for running even began to surface and that got cut very short on screen even though it was expanded in the novels.

I think that this whole thing is just trying to drum up some good TV ratings for one, and think that in the end we, the audience, are never going to know or find out his name.

Does it have some kind of intrinsic power? No.

Is it powerful? Yes, especially to the Doctor, since that is genuinely who he is and what he has been running from.

HOLY COW! You aren't kidding... I avoided Big Finish for as long as possible because it was so hard to navigate, I swear my 2 year old and dog must have developed the sitemap. This is actually user-friendly...excuse me while I quietly weep.

Some great Disney service that blew my mind -- had to share somewhere. by NJBiblioin disney

[–]NJBiblio[S] 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for the stories and the tips! I already wrote a pair of letters to Disney, so keeping fingers crossed the CMs get them. The next time we go down, I will definitely remember the cards though. I always make sure I go out of my way to talk to the CMs when I can and to thank them every time too. Working part time in a service industry slightly similar to them, I know how much it means to hear the compliments and thanks sometimes and how much I love talking to the guests, just as they must.

Help me puzzle out the Doctor's origins? Spoilers for all stories relevant to his origins...like Lungbarrow by LokianEulein gallifrey

[–]NJBiblio 1 point2 points ago

Oh, I think he might adopt some of it, change a hell of a lot of it and take the credit for all of it. I know that the origin story is going to be a big part of it anyway -- even though it was part of the Cartmel Masterplan begun with Seven and then wrapped up in Lungbarrow. You talk about needing to reconcile "canon" wait until Moffat get his hands on these stories...

I would be on board with this. I haven't gotten far into the audiodramas, but have read just about every novel there is, with the exception of those featuring Nine, Ten, and Eleven.

[–]NJBiblio 1 point2 points ago

Didn't see this until this morning, and I have nothing to add, but kudos on a great thread & discussion about something that will never be fully reconciled.

Hell of an effort though - I am still on the fence about looms and how that all works, especially in regards to the Other, but believe that this is going to somehow be a big part of the Doctor Who? question we're being teased with leading up to the 50th. It will be interesting to see how (and if) this is dealt with on screen.

Weekly Episode Discussion #12 - The War Games - Second Doctor. (Patrick Troughton) by IzzySawickiin gallifrey

[–]NJBiblio 1 point2 points ago

More theory than anything, it does help fill in some gaps, especially since we never see the regeneration from Two to Three occur as we have with all the other Doctors. I like the idea from a selfish POV in that it keeps the Second and Jamie together, plus it explains The Three and The Two Doctors in how he's seemingly working for the time Lords he should be running from at the time.

Epic Pen Pal Chain Update #2 by drzanin penpals

First off, thanks for doing this!!

Secondly, I have the same question about what will be sent along, because as this moves, it would get heavier, and the postage heftier which might deter some people.

Otherwise, I can't wait for it!

Try watching it in one 4-hour shot on PBS! Talk about committing...especially when you are young and the middle drug on because I was really interested in seeing how it ended, already know what would happen.
