But FYI, if you order an OVA that turns out to be an OAV but wasn't advertised as an AV, then you should RSVP or write to them PDQ but keep in on the QT lest your SO or someone who is a VIP get suspicious and you end up on KP or worse, MIA.

I don't have enough Japanese to do that yet. Takes me forever. But if the novel-based thing is what you like (again, like me), then click the "novel" tag and go through those. I think I've liked each and every one that was adapted from a novel or novel series.

Jigoku Shoujo (Hell Girl) is one that comes to mind... depends on what you liked about it. Another was made from a novel, so there's a bit more depth than your average anime, which might be one reason you liked it so much (and for me, too.) If you go to anidb and click on the "horror" tag, you'll get a very long list to sort through. Could be fun!

Thanks for clarifying things missing from my explanation. You are almost completely correct. If I may...

The studio doesn't contact the mangaka (usually). The production company contacts the manga's publisher. Often these days the production company IS the animation studio, but not always and not in the classical set up of Japanese division of labour. And they contact the publisher because it is they who hold the rights over the manga not the mangaka, unfortunately.

It is that production company who hires the animation studio. (If they are not in fact the same people...)

Of course there are exceptions to this. Many. I'm not a big follower of shounen titles, but Tite Kubo for example can pretty much write his own contract and his publishers and the producers of anime will fall in line or he'll take it somewhere else.

Usually, yes. It is depressing, though. Mangaka have so little control over their own art. It's like being a musician in America. XP

Yes, although in practice this isn't quite so clearly divided as it once was. The major studios have a LOT of power and money, and therefore have people who can supply those other roles.

I might point out to everyone that this is why criticism of GONZO has always been mostly misplaced. GONZO was blamed for messing up many fan favourite anime, when in fact it was things beyond their control like story (plot) or character that they complained about. Still the name of GONZO was the easy scapegoat...
