The first rule in war games is to assume your users are dicks. Some people consider it "winning the game", if the game itself is destroyed.

[classic?] Company announces hacking competition hosted on their server, troll immediately crashes it by ArchangelleLilithin SubredditDrama

I love this kind of stuff.

You're inviting all corners of the internet to crack your servers and solve a puzzle, but you didn't take any precautions to stop them from completely fucking everything up. If you're this trusting, how are you even qualified to put up this kind of challenge? This is a hobby that attracts a lot of unsavory people. It's like lockpicking. Some people just like the challenge. Some people like the ability to get into random buildings so they can burn them to the ground.

Why is this not an Olympic sport? by digital_dogfoodin videos

[–]LotusFlare 1 point2 points ago

Ok, at some point here I became confused. I don't know the reasons that this style of gymnastics is not in the Olympics and I am not trying to justify why it is not. I wasn't sure what jackson_meehoff was talking about or how it related to my response, so just I tried to define what's necessary to judge something the way Olympic gymnastics (or this acrobatic gymnastics) is judged.

I wasn't trying to start any kind of argument for or against anything, I just wanted to say how Olympic gymnastics is judged. =(

Drama in thread stems from calling SRS "feminist bitches" by Anticlimactic-storyin SubredditDrama

This part was pretty entertaining, especially if you follow simplecosine's responses.

"Do you have an example of sexism in wages?"

"Yes!"

"You should report that to the proper channels so it can get fixed and no one else faces it."

"No! It shouldn't be happening in the first place so I shouldn't have to do anything to fix it!"

[–]LotusFlare 6 points7 points ago

I wasn't addressing any of that, nor was that part of the question that was asked. The person asked how Olympic gymnastics could exist as a sport, and I explained how they do it. They remove as much of the subjective element as possible.

I'm sure they could judge this sport like that, they just haven't yet. It would take someone meticulously documenting every skill and it's permutations, and then a large panel of experts analyzing each one to determine the difficulty and how much it's worth to turn this into a sport similar to Olympic gymnastics.

Why is this not an Olympic sport? by digital_dogfoodin videos

[–]LotusFlare 11 points12 points ago

It's incredibly structured with little to no room for subjectivity. There's a giant manual with every accepted skill in it and it's value. All flaws have a specific number of points to subtract for them. Getting a new skill added to the manual is incredibly difficult and rare.

The maximum number of points your routine is worth is calculated before you even step up to the event.

Honestly, this is nice, but the quality is terrible. I don't want to watch a movie this big with gameboy color resolution.

I would much rather pay to see it in theaters than watch it for free like this.

Hajime no Ippo would be perfect. I feel like Kaiji would do pretty well. From the currently running season, both Eureka 7: AO and Lupin III would be perfect. I want Baccano! to get a TV run so badly. That show is amazing. Blue Exorcist was decent. Good enough to warrant a TV run.

For those who are curious, the dancing he does is botting (the very isolated levitation looking stuff), gliding (the smooth moonwalk looking stuff), and bone breaking (the crazy flexible stuff).

Some of my favorite weekends end up with me never interacting with anyone else other than a clerk at a store, and yet I fucking love to dance. I do it in private. I do it in public. I do it on stages. I do it in clubs. Dancing is the shit.

Stop mistaking being an introvert for being socially awkward.

What are some games that most people call 'classic', that you simply consider so outdated it's unplayable? by WtfWhereAreMyClothesin truegaming

[–]LotusFlare 1 point2 points ago

I don't think this (what I'm about to say) is necessarily what Gettingbetter meant, but JRPGs have better storytelling, although maybe not better stories.

I think JRPGs have made much better use of the medium as a way to tell a story than WRPGs. They've used cut scenes better. They've paced dialogue better. They've showed the characters movements and actions better. WRPGs have always felt incredibly stiff to me. Dialogue seems to happen in long monologues rather than lively exchanges. It's much more likely that an important event or backstory will be described to you by someone than that you will actually see or play it. They might have a good story to tell, but they didn't use the medium to their advantage at all.

That being said, dramatic improvements have been made since they ditched the isometric view.

What are your thoughts on Call of Duty and why? by Pixlrin truegaming

[–]LotusFlare 1 point2 points ago

Call of Duty isn't necessarily a bad game, but it is the lowest common denominator of the FPS genre.

It is a game designed being fast, frantic, and looking good. Lots of powerups, lots of bells and whistles. It does what it does well, but it really doesn't do very much. The game is pretty simplistic. Easy to learn, easy to master. If you played any other FPS at a reasonably high level, CoD brings nothing new to the table at all. Some would argue that it actually takes things off the table.

Again, this isn't bad! Simple, fun, run and gun! It fills in a great niche in the gaming world.

The serious problem with the game is how it's affected the public view of games. CoD has become popular enough that it is now the standard for many people. People expect all games to provide the same sort of instant gratification this series delivers, but everything can't be an instant gratification game. The gaming market is gravitating toward this style of gameplay and it's affecting the development cycle of games that would otherwise go down a different path.

As a game, I find no reason to dislike CoD. As a cultural phenomenon, CoD is pulling the gaming market in a direction I don't enjoy.

Let's say when you die, a being confronts you and allows you to build any scenario you want for the after life. What do you create? by I_Require_Downvotesin AskReddit

I want life again. I want the world exactly as I left it, time picking up right where it stopped for me. I want the same nearly endless universe to be spread out in front of us. I want to be reborn again in the world, but with echoes of my former life. I want to continue to grow old, die, and be reborn, each time maintaining bits of the most important lessons from my past lives. I want it to happen to everyone. The world will be forced to grow a little wiser, a little more compassionate, and a little bit more understanding with each passing generation. I want to see our species evolve to love one another and work together to do incredible things. I want to experience all the advancements in science and technology as we creep out into the stars and begin colonizing other planets. Then when the universe can no longer support itself and all life begins to end, I want to experience the grand celebration we have in remembrance of everything we've been able to accomplish and the experiences we've been able to share. Then, after everything collapses in on itself and we've all slipped off into the rest that awaits us in the void, I want to be a pony and go on adventures with Rainbowdash.

Every time I play Mario Kart by cronoizmin gaming

[–]LotusFlare 1 point2 points ago

Funny story.

In college, we had a big Mario Kart: DD tournament. In preparation for this, my friends and I practiced to ensure one of us would win. So "Dave" and "Alex" are going at it, and they're both pretty damn good at this game. The optimal strategy is to stay in second place as long as possible until you get a really good item and can pass safely into first in the last lap. The whole game is them both trying to stay on each other's tail without passing them until the last second. The games were actually slowing down because they were both actively trying to trick each other into taking the lead.

Everything culminates to one game where the starting countdown blinks to green... and no one moves. Alex edges forward a little. Dave goes a little more. They slowly move forward coming up to the first item box, neck and neck. They both stop. There's a pause, then they both slam on the gas pedal and start going... backwards. That's how valuable second place is in Mario Kart.

Dear True Gaming: having just got a new netbook I decided to plow through all the indie games I've purchased. Is a main selling point of indie games that they're very hard and repetitive? by MontyAtWorkin truegaming

[–]LotusFlare 0 points1 point ago

That's one way to think about it. You could also say that the game teaches you that the giant cherries can "fall" up too. The game never gives you any safe situation to see the cherry fall down, so by your definition that's also unfair. After the first one you now know how to handle it and can anticipate the next ones. The cherry falling patterns never change, so you can learn how to get through the section reliably and it boils down to your own mechanical skills.

In my view, there's nothing unfair about the cherry going up. What I learned from sections like this was that the game was going to be breaking some "rules" that other games put fourth. I could get this from the starting screen even. The spike wall comes from the "wrong" side the third time. This is what the game is all about, extremely unexpected obstacles. You must train yourself to be suspicious of what the game teaches you. By about halfway through the game, I was anticipating most of the "unfair" obstacles before I touched them. Doesn't mean they didn't kill me because of the difficult timing, but I was pretty sure it was coming.

Once you realize that the same obstacle can have multiple behaviors, your version of unfairness ceases to exist. You must also realize that you're supposed to die in this game. Part of the fun of the game is obstacles that you honestly can't see coming even if you're careful. It's about being fooled. That's why save points are so abundant, so making mistakes isn't that big of a deal. This might not be your deal, but it certainly doesn't make it a bad game.

[–]LotusFlare 0 points1 point ago

Illogical, maybe, but the game is completely fair. There are no random patterns or unbeatable obstacles. The game never leads you down dead ends. It just requires very precise platforming, and a little bit of intuition and creativity.

It's a very fun game if you have a sense of humor and know what you're getting into. Another part of the respect the game gets is that it pulls from so many other classic games. The soundtrack and sprite selections are pretty damn good.
