More than 40,000 ultra-Orthodox Jewish men plan to pack Citi Field for Sunday's gathering on the dangers of the Internet by HitSentFromPresidentin worldnews

[–]Lord_Monkey 2 points3 points ago

They are meeting to discuss how to manage the internet within their own lives and communities, not how it is evil and no body should have it. Seems that's a sane approach to the issue-

Travel the world in 6 hours. Thoughts? by AoutivDin technology

[–]Lord_Monkey 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure how big of an engineering challenge the underwater part would be. Evacuating the air from a tube increases the pressure differential only be one atmosphere. If this system goes to any depth it will be under tens of atmospheres of pressure. Presumably you would want any long tube to be segmented to reduce the leak problem.

A cheap diabetes pill,Metformin, increased the activity of an enzyme involved in tumor suppression, suggesting that the drug might fight cancer by working directly on cancer cells. by aspeenatin science

[–]Lord_Monkey 2 points3 points ago

Actually learned about this in a class recently. It works by promoting AMPK, which inhibits mTor (Google rapamycin). Fun fact: AMPK is the same kinase responsible for the non-insulin dependant drop in blood sugar when you exercise. This is not a wonder drug, but it is believed it could help support existing cancer therapies, which is great since Metformin is a well tolerated drug with few issues.

This comic made me more depressed than I've felt in a long time. I love xkcd, but I wish I could have not seen this. So sad.

This is a shady website, don't support them. It is a direct Kickstarter clone, but all the projects are by the same guy from Hong Kong and you pay through Pay Pal, not Amazon.

I couldn't tell from the article, is the six hour working lifespan limited to one use? If it can sequence 150 Mbps could you instead use it in 15 second bursts to do shorter sequencing in the lab?

Does anyone else think that regenerative medicine ought to be the first stop along the road to transhumanism? by kurtgodelisdeadin transhumanism

[–]Lord_Monkey 1 point2 points ago

Probably. Regenerative medicine has great potential to not just replace failing organs, but to replace them with improved organs. For example, we are currently working on iPS cell therapies that modify the genome in sickle cell anemia sufferers, so that we can provide corrected hemopoeitic precursor cells, thus curing the disease. There is not reason that in the future we couldn't improve the same tissue in normal people to improve immune function, reduce strokes, etc. There is really no limitation on what we can do with this technology, its just so early in development that there hasn't been a single human trial yet.

I think anyone that assumes the transhumanist movement will start out entirely with mechanical and biomechanical solutions is forgetting that evolution has had billions of years to develop really advanced systems, and we are now beginning to learn how to use those systems.

First ‘Heartless’ Man: You Don’t Really Need A Heart, Or A Pulse by Aleph_0in transhumanism

[–]Lord_Monkey 1 point2 points ago

You could probably also just monitor the current blood saturation of Hb (technology we already have, its those little finger clips you get at the hospital with the red lights) and adjust rate according to that. Its probably not needed to get all fancy with hormone signals.

Dick Cheney has a LVAD (Left Ventricle Assist Device). You can think of it like internal CPR, it basically help push blood when the left ventricle contracts. I don't believe the devices themselves usually contract (centrifugal pumping), but they are only assisting the function of the heart.

Iran calls for Israel to be "punished" by admvgddkdqin worldnews

[–]Lord_Monkey 0 points1 point ago

So do you run and cower from every police officer on the street? Do you hide your skin color and religion? No, you live a pretty normal existence with the understanding that there are some really stupid things going on that aren't really impacting you on an every day basis. If you feel angry, don't yell at me, get up from your computer and call your representative.

Iran calls for Israel to be "punished" by admvgddkdqin worldnews

[–]Lord_Monkey 13 points14 points ago

I don't know if my reasons are the same as Massa's, but let me give you my opinion.

I support Israel in the same way that I support the United States, with the knowledge that is has great potential and the understanding that no country should be allowed to unfairly treat any of its residents (not citizens, residents). I like to think of it with this simple test, could I see myself as living a normal life in Israel? Could I see myself living a normal life in Iran? Easy question.

Would this be useful for treating alcohol poisoning? I know a leading cause of death by alcohol poisoning is cessation of breathing, so if this blocks some of the neurological effects could it help with that? Anyone with more experience?
