What "amazing fact" or colloquialism do you know is actually wrong, and you're sick of correcting people about it? by TestZeroin AskReddit

[–]LibraryGeek 0 points1 point ago

It looks like competing paleontologists found what they thought were two species. Further study revealed that one was the juvenile form of the other. Brontosaurus is still an acceptable synonym though. From the unmuseum

In his rush to beat Cope, Marsh had made a mistake, however. The Apatosaurus was not a separate species, but simply a juvenile example of Brontosaurus. In 1903 Elmer Riggs of the Field Museum in Chicago was studying Marsh's work when he found this mistake:

...the writer is convinced that the Apatosaur specimen is merely a young animal of the form represented in the adult by the Brontosaur specimen.

Riggs, following the naming rules for animals that applied at the time added:

...In view of these facts the two genera may be regarded as synonymous. As the term"Apatosaurus" has priority, "Brontosaurus" will be regarded as a synonym.

I think that comes from people conflating wary (aka leery) with weary.

thanks and bless you! But but but scorpions are not round!!

I can handle looking a scorpion from afar, but will run/throw things at anything that is spiderish. I live in blue crab country and sometimes they look too spiderish:( I always raced to get rid of the legs! lol

hypothyroid: not enough thyroid, easliy gain weight, other symptoms. When treated you do not have the symptoms. (One cause is Hashimodo's thyroid, which is an inherited error) hyperthyroid: too much thyroid, can't gain weight, other symptoms. (one cause is Grave's Disease)

Both are treated with thyroid replacements. In Grave's your thyroid is either radiated or surgically removed so that there is not waiting to get rid of the extra hormone. My mom and sister both have Hashimodo's being on high doses of hormone therapy has shurnk their thyroids. My partner has hypothyroidism w/o a specific known cause. She is on a low dose hormone and her thyroid is still fully functional. Y Blood tests are needed to keep the levels in a healthy range. However, during the day the thyroid hormones will surge after taking them and then wane as the day goes by. A person w/o a working thyroid who is out of thyroid is exhausted == there is no energy.

Being overweight does not affect thyroid production. It is not like diabetes, high cholesterol and other diet mediated diseases.

It is not a fabulous excuse for being overweight.

It is a harder row to hoe than a young, healthy male has.

Again, being overweight does not cause thyroid problems.

My wife is disabled due to a crash accident that happened 4 years ago. Is it wrong of me to want to move on with my life? by ThrowawayAcctforeverin AskReddit

I scanned the answers looking for this one :) I immediately thought of the same article.

American Pad & Paper, owned by Bain Capital, told all 258 workers they were fired. Security guards hustled them out of the building. They would be able to reapply for their jobs, at lesser wages and benefits, but not all would be rehired. by droivodin politics

corporate takeovers do not require the acquired company to be in trouble. They just have to be smaller and/or the move has to be beneficial to the stockholders.

Don't forget the prolapsing bladder that a lot of child bearing women later develop.

Breeder sold us a pup, he ended up sick the night we brought him home. Need advice, story inside. by chocolateheartsin dogs

[–]LibraryGeek 2 points3 points ago

You have no idea what was the condition he or his parents were kept it, you only know it was breed for profit. Of course, if the breeder is regulating it might reduce those risks, but I'm not familiar with how good the regulations are in your country (or anywhere actually).

Isn't this true of pound puppies as well? You don't know the conditions of it's parents or the pup's upbringing. I'm very pro rescue the pups that we have rather than breeding more (especially the accidental litters and puppy mills that are not maintaining the breed and watching for health issues). However, I'm not sure this is the argument to make to get people to go with pound puppies.

My 7 year old son told me (a single father) that he wants to be a girl and that he's always felt this way. Is he transgender? What should I do? by confusedfather28in AskReddit

[–]LibraryGeek 14 points15 points ago

The point being made is that delaying puberty delays that decision. Undergoing puberty makes that decision much harder later. I've met some tortured souls who can never pass because of their secondary sex characteristics. Delaying puberty enables the child to mature into the chosen gender without maturing into a gender that does not fit. Postponing puberty means that the kid only goes through one puberty that fits their gender.

Puberty brings for boys: voice changes, coarsening of facial features, increased body/facial hair, testosterone induced personality/mood changes. For girls: breasts, much more slight vocal changes, a softening of facial and bodily features, menstruation and the ovulation cycle.

Once the characteristics set in, it is harder to undo them.

a cane is tons easier than crutches b/c it leaves you with one hand free. Another thing to look for/creat is a wrist loop. I slip my wrist loop on when I'm shopping or otherwise using my arms. Otherwise I'm liable to leave it behind on a good day.

Are there any non-religious arguments against banning same-sex marriage? by PepSupChOthin AskReddit

[–]LibraryGeek 2 points3 points ago

The thing is that this line of discussion is not getting into the many many benefits given to married couples that have nothing to do with taxes.

Non financial benefits: first person to make health decisions of incapacitated spouse (even with legal power of attorney some hospitals in some states refuse to recognize the spouse)

The ability to talk to health care professionals. (asshats are free to refuse to do so)

The ability to handle affairs after death. (In some states, even if you have paper work as executor of will, PoA, etc if the family objects you are SoL.)

The ability to refuse to divulge private conversations in the court of law. (spouses cannot be forced to recount private (generally damaging) conversations in court. It is up there with client/attorney, client/doctor privileges.)

It is not all about the money and many of our laws, regulations and policies use the term "spouse". If we create another legal category, we know that they will not have the same benefits as spouses. New Jersey tried the "we are calling them domestic partners but the benefits are the same as married" It led to a ridiculous backlog of legal cases for all of the people whining that the definition doesn't apply to their policy, regulation, rules, etc.
