TROPHY CASE

Beginner Photographers -- Do you ever turn down offers for paid work because your skill isn't up to par? by FoxxMDin photography

[–]KatAttack 2 points3 points ago

I recently shot a wedding for a friend of a friend type situation, as their original photographer had to cancel last minute. I had never done anything like that before and was terrified the week leading up to it - but I think I got some decent shots out of it.

They reaaally wanted to pay me but I insisted that they didn't. Mainly, I didn't want them to have higher expectations. They knew I had never done this before and knew I didn't have professional grade equipment, but I feel like accepting payment is saying "I'm a professional - I got this." And I was uncomfortable with that. I appreciated it as a fantastic learning experience.

US cyclists save $4.6 billion a year compared to motorists. Though biking and walking account for 12 percent of all trips in the USA, these transportation modes receive only 1.6 percent of federal transportation spending. by marcussantiagoin Frugal

Once I started biking to work, I saved $175/year on car insurance alone. Of course I also save on gas costs, wear & tear costs, my health costs...

If you have the time, take a day trip up to Sedona - one of the most beautiful places in the world!! They also have Oak Creek Brewery up there.

As far as amazing cocktails go, my vote is for Citizen Public House in old town Scottsdale - they are amazing and have a great reputation.

Pizzeria Bianco in downtown Phoenix has won national attention from chefs and celebritys so that might be one of those "once in a lifetime" things - although Phoenix locals seem to have the attitude of "meh, not worth the 3 hour wait."

There used to be Oakville Grocery, but they closed about 2 - 3 months ago. They also only sold speciality items and had very high prices.

Seriously, paying 1/6 of my money ever month just for car insurance is getting old. by fleetingsentimentin Frugal

I started riding my bike to work and got my insurance to change my driving use to "for pleasure" only - saved me over $180/year!

I really like the idea of the store-version of the Public Market, but truth is that it is too expensive to do any real grocery shopping there. A specialty item or a delish sandwich - sure! But what downtown REALLY needs is a place like Basha's or Trader Joe's. The CVS at CityScape was a fantastic addition to downtown - I know we all love our local places down here, but I need somewhere to buy groceries, damnit!

Free Standup Comedy Show, 7th Ave and Osborne by OrdinaryCitizenin phoenix

I've been here several times and it is great entertainment and FREE! The level of comedy, of course, varies from act to act but there are some really, really good ones.

Gold's at Cityscape downtown is doing $20/month, no contract - but there is a $40 sign up fee.

The Y is pretty pricey - especially for promoting themselves as being community orientated. They're about $40/month.

Ok, Seriously, whats with all the "my pet needs a home" posts? by aarghjin phoenix

[–]KatAttack 2 points3 points ago

For the past month I have been taking care of stray kittens born in my attic (had to trap the mom too so she could feed them). In about 3 weeks I plan to spend about $100 of my own money to get them all fixed. I could just drop them off with a $40 donation to the Humane Society and be done with it. But, I don't want to use their resources when I can handle it myself pretty well.

When these babies are ready to go, you bet yo' ass I will posting a flyer here! For some reason, I trust Redditors more than Craigslist people. I imagine people putting their pets on here might feel the same way.

I don't mind the posts - Phoenix isn't a super active subreddit and the pages are not flooded with these kinds of requests anyhow.

Hello, everybody! I know this gets olds but my husband and I are coming up to Phoenix, what should we do? by tbratlienin phoenix

[–]KatAttack 6 points7 points ago

On your way to the Grand Canyon, take the 89A up and drive through Sedona. It is touristy as hell, but it is also one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Staying downtown and near the lightrail is a good thing - you will be away from the majority of chains and housing developers out in the burbs.

What days will you be here exactly? You might be able to make it to the artsy First Friday downtown (or any of the other events associated with it).

Hmm, I specifically used a planting calendar for the Phoenix area. But thank you for the tip! I will remember to plant some for the fall season!

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense, so I "selectively terminated" the weaker looking ones. That made me kind of sad.

Planning a honeymoon: Any tips/ideas on how to do this on the cheap without staying at a Holiday Inn (love me some HI, just not on my Honeymoon)? by shaq32in Frugal

I've never looked in to how good of a deal they actually are, but Groupon and Living Social are constantly sending me emails for "discounted" exotic (and local) vacations. Maybe check some of those out?

I know its nothing amazing, my foreign exchange students got a HUGE kick out of Five n' Diner - it was just "sooooo American."

I went two years ago and had a great time doing it, and met lots of really fun people too! That said, it was a good "one time" thing...
