Another thought - just for giggles, because a mobo can be expensive to replace: boot to a linux live cd. Try there. If your USB peripherals work in linux, it's windows drivers.

It's a slim chance, but you may as well eliminate everything, right?

If it will occur within a minute, with known good mouse, in any usb port, you most likely have a mobo issue. Sorry :(

When this is the case, it will boot to the windows start screen, then reboot. If it never makes it to the windows logo and starts loading drivers the chances are slim.

The reset to factory settings is a clue thou. If someone installed in compatibility mode b/c there were no ahci drivers on their install disk (XP SP3) then a factory bios reset would most likely go into AHCI.

Sounds like a voltage problem.

Unplug all usb devices.

Start with mouse and keyboard. See if problem occurs in a couple hours. Plug in next USB device. Test and repeat until failure.

When failure occurs, unplug a known good working device and plug in the last device that caused the failure. If it still fails, you have a bad device. Otherwise, you may be drawing too much power.

If it fails on just keyboard and mouse, eliminate USB ports by switching them to new ones. I once had issues with my front USB ports but the back were fine.

Not sure if relevant, but I just finished testing and installing a couple of Toshiba nb255's in some ships for skype, remote admin of the vessel, etc.

They are nothing fancy, but I was fairly impressed with their performance and stability.

edit: oh. and if you stack them on top of each other they wont start. Magnetic locks and all that. :/
