Oh boy, I just studied Christian relationships, dating and marriage for 2 months. I'll summarize what I've learned.

In essence, marriages work when both parties are working towards God. Often times, a couple marries thinking that it'll make each other happy, and that as long as they love one another it'll work out, and complications arise because of such romantic ideals. They find out that they cannot complete each other's life, and they're not as happy as they thought they would. Two imperfect people come together thinking that their marriage will make their lives better, and they are surprised when, after the honeymoon phase is over, they have difficulties dealing with each other's imperfections, difficulties raising children together because of different ethics, and difficult lives, even though their love is supposed to keep it all together.

From what I've learned, marriage is a challenge as much as it is a blessing. My older friends who were getting married constantly and endlessly sought advice from mentors, and prayed fervently that they could grow to be good husbands or wives. Yet, in spite of all their seriousness, they are considered happily married.

This is assumingly because they put God as the center of their marriage, not each other. In Christianity, marriage is ultimately for the glory of God, to be the image of God that we're all supposed to be. Ephesians 5 goes deeply into marriage, and compares it like Jesus's relationship to the Church, which I'll let you make that comparison yourself. This is how marriages are supposed to work as well.

That said, such marriage will require both parties to understand their full responsibilities. Will your boyfriend eventually follow such principles when he doesn't believe in them? Is he willing to work for God, someone whom he doesn't believe or trust, so that all who see your marriage sees a reflection of God, a bond like Christ and his Church? When you are in conflict, will you adhere to the same ethics and refer to the same guide for answers? Examine the marriage between your parents, and decide if you see the things I've described, and wish to settle for the same marriage despite that you're a genuine Christ follower who wishes to serve him for life and more. Do not let your infatuations cloud your judgement, no matter what "connection" you may see in him.
