Your recipe pet peeves by modemacin Cooking

[–]JapanNow 17 points18 points ago

My wish is that some day soon all recipes will be written using metric weight. Then the cooks can adjust the ingredients based on local produce, taste the results, and - the next time - improve it.

A "medium onion" in India is HALF the size of a "medium onion" in the US.

A "medium tomato" in Japan is HALF the size of a "medium tomato" in the US.

They were cold! You can see it from their posture. A blanket should have been laid down on them.

Saudi Arabia bans use of English, Gregorian calendar by RaphaeIin worldnews

[–]JapanNow 7 points8 points ago

In Japan, they STILL use the "emperor who is/was in power and his year of reign". I kid you not, even today, people don't know when some event occurred using the Gregorian calendar.

When was your Dad born? Showa 33 (1958). When was your brother born? Heisei 3 (1991). It's the most awkward and cumbersome thing!

Gack. http://www.meijigakuin.ac.jp/~watson/ref/mtsh.html

Using these "emperor markers" is a great way to keep the imperial lineage front and center. I assume cultures that maintain these types of "boutique calendars" are just hell-bent on maintaining their "unique heritage".

What a pain though!

TIL that there has been an estimated 250 years of world peace in the last 3,400 years of documented history by ButterMyMuffinin todayilearned

[–]JapanNow 0 points1 point ago

I came here to comment, and all I can think of is "War is such a waste - - of life, resources, time". But that's so obvious and trite.

You'd think humans would have learned something over the past 3,400 years... but I guess not. We are so lame.

Weird story alert: My kid went to a zoo and "was chosen" on the spot to hold a baby-sloth in front of the group. OMG. She came home smelling worse than a skunk. Her clothes had to be thrown away because they were so putrid smelling.

NIKW!!! (Now I Know Why; that creature was a pus-bag of excrement and piss. Grr)

Gimme these beautiful rivers. Pleeze.

Dashi-no-moto: artificial fish-flavored-broth granules. Most probably contains msg. Convenient. Probably not the healthiest thing to eat every day.

4 The ketchup on pasta:

I was flabbergasted when I first ate "Spaghetti Napolitan" in Japan. Yep, it's basically pre-boiled spaghetti stir-fried with ketchup and slivers of onion, Japanese "piman" (a bitter, thin-walled variety of the western "sweet bell pepper"), ham, and mushrooms.

Then it's topped with "powdered cheese" (an ersatz parmesan cheese, made in Japan).

This is classic post-WWII fare still loved today. Here's a link to a recipe with a photo if you don't believe me! http://www.kikkoman.co.jp/homecook/search/recipe.php?numb=00003295
