TIL the actress who plays Talisa from "Game of Thrones" is Charlie Chaplin's granddaughter. by jay4523in todayilearned

Why not? Guys watch straight porn for the girls, so what's the difference?

In around 120 years, every person currently alive will be dead, and the earth will be completely populated with people that have not yet been born. What other inevitable facts about the future do you think about? by diddletapflamdiddlein AskReddit

We still consider the technological advances of the Greeks and later the Romans to be mind-bending; we remember the names of the scholars who came up with the fundamental principles of the mathematics we still use today.

Who's "we?" The vast majority of people today couldn't even tell you who Pythagoras was.

I love it too. I'm not being sarcastic; the fact that people are expected to cite their sources instead of spewing obvious lies is a wonderful thing.

RPG's fall into the definition a lot better than other genres though, due to the highly repetitive and simple (i.e. not requiring much skill) nature of the tasks involved.

Simply saying "tree fiddy" does get old, but you might notice that doomgoblin's version of the joke is a clever and topical take on the reference.

Growing up, I remember a huge movement to "Save the Rain Forest". Being that it's about 15+ years later, how did that movement impact the environment and specifically rain forest? What was achieved and/or lost? by senorcoolin askscience

[–]Izzhov 1 point2 points ago

It is possible for something to be "worth reading" and still be outside of the scope of this subreddit. If it doesn't do anything to answer the question, it doesn't belong here, regardless of how "worth reading" it is.

1 in 7 people think the end of the world will occur during their lifetime, with 1 in 10 fearing the Mayan prophecy will come true. by kelty04in offbeat

[–]Izzhov 0 points1 point ago

Well that's definitely not the same as the world ending, isn't it?

Yes, it is. It means you don't give a shit about the billions of other people on this planet. That makes you a bad person.

Would the placebo effect still be observed in a culture that has no concept of medicine? by taximesin askscience

What it means is that you have some independent variables you weren't accounting for.

Just an FYI, a major part of the scientific doctrine is that because your experiment wasn't "in a lab under ideal conditions" (by which I only mean it didn't account for all the variables), it is precisely meaningless and says nothing.

Except for the fact that it only exists like that because of the sexist stereotype that teachers are women.

Whaddya mean "theoretical?" Unlike, say, string theory, QM has been verified experimentally many times over. I fail to see how that makes it "theoretical."

ELI5: Why does every application to anything ever want to know specifically if I'm Hispanic or Latino? by Craziumin explainlikeimfive

[–]Izzhov 6 points7 points ago

That wasn't the question. OP wants to know why Hispanic/Latino is a separate question on the application from the "put a check next to your race" question on the form.
