This is sort of embarrassing, but is there some kind of beginner's guide to PC gaming for the computer illiterate? by HoratioHufnagelin lowendgaming

Thank you, that does help a lot. What's the difference between particles and textures?

Idea for this subreddit: NONOFX Threads - a weekly(?) thread for sharing and discussing new or lesser known bands by HoratioHufnagelin punk

[–]HoratioHufnagel[S] 0 points1 point ago

Because the other random threads usually don't flourish. I don't think the bigger bands are taking away attention from the smaller ones, it's that people aren't really paying attention to them anyway. Maybe if we had a massive weekly thread that really pushed for sharing and discussion, people would want to be more involved. I don't know, just an idea.

Do you believe the Civil Rights Act of 1964 should be amended to include sexual orientation and/or gender identity?

Yes, too many people think that the purpose of charities is to act as a middle man that takes your donation and distributes it directly to the poor. While I'm sure there are charities designed to do something like that, in my experience it is best to approach donating to a charity as buying a service for someone else to use. When researching a charity, always read their mission statement and have a grasp of their activities and services before you make any judgments on their finances.

Should we shy away from biased news sources? by zapyou42in politics

Because everything not left-leaning is hateful ignorance? It's that kind of refusal to even acknowledge the other side of an argument that makes it incredibly difficult to have any decent discussion here.

That said, I would like to see some evidence of these bans.

It's an issue that I think is just as important as gay marriage but gets a fraction of the press.

I agree that it should be, and it already is in a number of states but not Georgia

Edit: Here's a link for those wondering what states do and do not have anti-discrimination laws based on sexual orientation

Ok I think I'm getting it now, thank you so much. Every answer in this thread just raises new questions for me. Can anyone recommend me some good books or other resources so I can get a better grasp of how this all works?

Wait, are you responsible for picking the investments yourself? And if everyone in a company gets lumped together, what happens if you leave the company and move to another one, especially if part of your money is invested in something like a government bond that doesn't pay out until a certain date?

Also what's the difference between a 401(k) and a pension, or are they the same thing? Do 401(k)s and pensions for police or public school teachers work differently?

Sorry, now I feel like an actual five year old asking all these questions

While I think that disqualifying candidates based on IQ is pretty misguided, the city is justified in worrying about officers leaving the force early after training. It is extremely expensive to train a police class, and plenty of municipal governments already have enough trouble raising the money to replace retiring police. Just like any other job, you have to worry about spending time and money training overqualified candidates who will move along as soon as a better opportunity arises. Again, I don't think IQ is a very good measure of this (something like public service motivation would probably be much better), but this is probably much more about saving the city money than it is about keeping officers from thinking about their actions.

So you want to play a gig (or maybe you want to put on a gig): Here's how it works (in the UK at least)... by loudribsin PunkMusicians

[–]HoratioHufnagel 1 point2 points ago

This is all very true, and the first point can't be stressed enough. The best way to get shows is to go out and make friends with people in the local music scene. Punk scenes can be very cliquey and it can be very difficult to convince someone to give your band a shot if they don't know who you are. Your life will be much easier if you know the promoters, the sound guys, the bartenders, the people working the door, and especially people in other local bands. You get to know them by going to shows, lots and lots of shows. Bands you've never heard of, bands you don't even like. The music is important but don't underestimate the social aspect of the music scene, and don't expect to get very far if you're isolated from it.
