To salvage that idea, she very well could have had the same dream that Cadence had when she was little--but her memory of those dreams was twisted by the countless years of parasitism and, well, evil that she has experienced since.

An alternate idea that popped into my head for that is that, for some reason, she still spends her days in the old castle in the Everfree Forest (you know, where the Elements were found in the S1 opener). I haven't come up with a good reason why yet, though.

True, but the area in question isn't just one building, it's an entire landscape. Also, the old castle was right in the thick of the forest, not out on the edge of it--this is why it was quite the adventure to get to it, if you'll recall.

The 'barrens', I'll call them, seem to be more like the region Spike visited during Dragon Quest.

Perhaps the double bass/cello isn't the only thing she can play. In fact, my headcanon for her is that her talent is to play virtually any instrument with fantastic skill--this would, of course, include instruments that play in the treble clef.

Why do you think the more dangerous denizens of the Everfree Forest (you know, that little pile of sticks that her house is on the edge of) seldom come to antagonize Ponyville? She's there to (politely) ask them to return to the forest if they ever start wandering out.
