TROPHY CASE

How many of you have paid for your meal at a wedding? My gf and I are expected to pay $80-100 each for our meals at an upcoming wedding, the bride says its an "unspoken tradition" by bootsmegamixin AskReddit

Take your girlfriend to the nicest restaurant in town instead, and spend your $200 there. You'll get to choose what you want to eat, the food is guaranteed to be of better quality, and you won't have to sit through any boring wedding traditions or listen to music from a terrible DJ or band. Then send the bride a photo of the two of you enjoying your meal, with a note saying congratulations, and this is how you decided to celebrate her special day.

Life is so hard for you. This is definitely the worst problem in the world, people being offended by careless use of language. WORST PROBLEM. IN. THE. WORLD.

Relax. Nobody actually thinks it's intended to be about rape. It's just unfortunately worded. It's almost impossible to read it and not immediately think of rape, since "no means no" has been an anti-rape slogan for decades. So it was idiotic of Domino's to put such a thing on a pizza box.

Right? Men love sex, all they think about is sex, they constantly want sex. That's just how they are, and it's regrettable but BRO FIST MAN!

I agree, the conclusion was terribly unsatisfactory. I get the sense that Vaughan didn't actually know where he was headed with it when he started the series, and maybe didn't know how many issues he'd be allowed to do. Then when it was a hit and he was able to keep going with it, he had to make it up as he went along. And it shows.

Yes, I see that now! I need to read more carefully, and maybe not post after I've been awake a certain number of hours.

She's just using hyperbole. If you are denied any right, it can be argued that you have no rights at all. Having rights isn't a matter of degrees. Having some rights is not okay.

I'm sorry - were you being serious? I read your comment as sarcastic. I guess I was on the defensive and jumped to the worst conclusion. Please accept my apology.

Sometimes you disagree with someone, but the two of you do agree on a few basic premises. In that case it can be worthwhile and enlightening to have a good faith discussion about your differing views.

But sometimes you disagree with someone about the fundamental nature of the world. That's not a discussion worth having, and it will never lead anywhere. It's a like a creationist posting in a science forum -- the only goal is to poke and jab, not to have a real debate.

MRA's who post in this subreddit fall into the latter camp. They don't believe that women's inequality is a thing. If that's the case, if you reject the fundamental premises of feminism, then you have no business joining a conversation about feminism. Opponents of feminism don't argue in good faith. They derail potentially constructive threads, and they quite simply ruin the subreddit.

This isn't about free speech or open discussion. If I want to defend the right of feminism to exist, then I'll go dive into an anti-feminist subreddit and tell them how wrong they are. But I don't feel the need to debate feminism's right to exist; that's not the purpose of a feminism subreddit.

How about starting ONE THREAD where people can go to argue over whether patriarchy and privilege actually exist, and whether feminism is harming the world and/or oppressing men. And ban ALL DISCUSSION of those topics from every other thread?

Otherwise, they'll continue to shit up the subreddit and drive actual real discussion away.

That's the gist of it. I've noticed people have trouble understanding the difference between social systems and the people who make up those systems. They figure if the system favors certain groups, the people in those groups are being blamed/accused.

Yeah, learning sucks! Thoughts and ideas should be static and unchanging. That's the way to go.

If you can't understand the difference between having privilege and being at fault or to blame, then there's no point in me trying to explain anything to you. It's not a mainstream view that all men are privileged all the time. That would be a nonsensical thing to say. The fact that many hierarchies exist is too broad for you to get your head around? Then let it go. Go about your life and let other people worry about it.
