I slapped one of my kids in the face while getting him ready for school one stressful morning (kindergarten). It devastated me. I started sobbing so much, all four of my kids were trying to comfort me--including the one I hit. I immediately made a doctor's appointment and got on meds for PMS. The lowest point in my parenting as far as I'm concerned, but it became a family joke--mom hit one of her babies and she's the one who was traumatized.

Just last week my son (the one I hit) and I were talking about it (he's 22 now) and he said to me that he was being a shit and deserved it. I don't agree, but was grateful that even this many years later, he tried to make me feel less guilty about it.

I've wished for ignorance every now and then since I was a teen. Being so aware of the shit that is going on around you can make you feel so incredibly lonely at times. That said, I prefer smart and unhappy over the alternative.

I live on one the most westward points of the coast of CA (born in '57) less than a mile from a nuke plant (shut down now--built on a fault--but the rods remain) We even had a "fall-out" map and were always aware we had become a "target".

There's a batch of younger, vocal liberals coming up through the ranks (I'm too tired and lazy to figure out a list of their names). It may take a few election cycles, but I think an FDR, JFK or RFK may come along, but it shouldn't rely on one man. It's the mindset of the majority of Congress and the country that must just plain get pissed off as well.

Shit, I thought the end of the Cold War (as a "Boomer") would be the end of my worries about my country. Fuck. I was so very wrong.
