Perhaps if doctors weren't required to spend $200k+ (plus 8+ years of lost wages) on their education, and whatever $millions on malpractice insurance, medical care could be cheap enough that people wouldn't ask for national healthcare.

You could still go to the expensive, highly trained, insured doctors if you can afford it. But why not let poor folks without insurance have options?

Eating "maintenance" means you're eating just enough food to supply all of your energy expenditures, which results in no energy storage (and no weight change).

You can't "eat maintenance" and then "burn to a deficit" at the same time. Either you ate maintenance or you ate a deficit.

Two wars that cost Americans and Europeans (but mostly Americans) trillions of dollars are almost directly because of him. Don't tell me we would have gone to war with Iraq anyway - the voters had to hate on Muslims enough. Also, the U.S. made sweeping changes to the structure of its executive branch. Additionally, we've lost countless freedoms and rights and it's now assumed by everyone that privacy pretty much no longer exists.

I can't think of any single person who has influenced the world greater than that in recent history.

I can explain why the logic is right?

I mean we didn't have Facebook, cars, phones or anything - if you wanted to meet someone, you pretty much had to walk. This limited the groups we interacted with to much smaller numbers.

So, historically, for the majority of us there was really only a small group that we stuck around with. It wasn't often that you'd change groups. So all that mattered was your status in the group. "The majority of society" was largely irrelevant back then.

Actually, this kind of thing is not entirely irrational. It actually makes perfect sense coming from an evolutionary perspective.

Consider the well-known fact that higher relative social status in a group will improve your chances of reproducing within that group.

My gym is kind of disgusting, and there's piss on the floor of the bathrooms more often than not. The same people who step in that piss also run on the treadmills.

I had just started working out in college and I spent about 1.5 hours at the gym doing much more exercise than I'd ever done previously in my life. On my way home (in the car) I suddenly realized that I might throw up. I don't throw up often, and I thought I'd have enough time to find a bathroom - so I pulled over at the next place I could find - an Applebees.

I walk inside. The place is packed, and the hostess asks me "Party of how many?" to which I responded by vomiting profusely all over the floor in the center of the crowd of waiting customers. When I was done, I promptly exited the facility.

Yeah - even if half of the money is spent on research towards making weapons, a much smaller portion of it ends up being useful in other non-related fields. This guy tries to make it sound like half the money is helping us out - it's not. Think of it as 1.45T for toys, and if we're lucky some trickle-down research effect helps the rest of the world out.

It would be far better to spend 1.45T directly on research to solve life's little problems. The argument that the research helps us out is BS.
