Marcus Persson (Notch) answers an offer to track people across the internet by soundhaudegenin gaming

[–]FishTacos 2 points3 points ago

Why do you assume a salesperson thinks their customer is a "mark?" If you're not providing real value to your customers, who won't make it in business, life, or in sales. You will fail rather spectacularly.

Also, how did the salesperson treat Notch like an idiot?

I agree, I thought the salesman articulately stated the benefit of his product. If you don't want it, you don't want it.

You're assuming they forgot.

What if they are doing research and delayed their purchase? What if they accidentally closed out after getting disctracted doing something else?

Retargeting is so cheap, if you get an extra 4-5% of customers returning through the program it is worth it.

Most campaigns are not measured by clicks, that is considered to be out of date, except in new fields like mobile advertising.

People do pay plenty of money for brand campaigns on the web, and don't require clicks to be considered successful.

You don't have to click on an ad for the campaign to make money. There are plenty of ad campaigns that are not sold on a performance basis, but on a simple volume basis.

And don't forget all those video ads you saw. The brands in those videos many times are paying for the ad space, not for your engagement.

Don't forget there are branding campaigns that don't require click throughs, just it showing up on someone's page.

Plus video ads, etc. that don't require clicks.

Questions about wood for a butcher block. by bobgengeskahnin DIY

[–]FishTacos 1 point2 points ago

The end grain butcher block (the first picture you mentioned) is superior but takes longer as you need to do 2 glue ups. Either will work though. I'd use maple instead of fir if you can afford it.

I use something called Salad Bowl Finish instead of mineral oil. Dilute it by half with thinner, then apply 3 coats, sanding between each one. That will seal it without the need for yearly treatments like mineral oil. It is a food safe finish.

What size level would you recommend? Would 48" be enough or is 72" or more useful?

Built a screen in porch so I could enjoy my house in the sticks by no_dicein DIY

Cedar often works just fine, especially if painted - my 100+ year old house in the rainy pacific northwest still has the original cedar siding on it with barely any noticeable wear. I believe pressure treated is really only necessary where the wood is coming in contact with the ground.

Are you young? Like a teenager?

Taste buds change as you get older and beer is one of those things that gets more palatable. Same for coffee.

What about an accessory like this? Have you heard anything about it? Fine woodworking talks it up, but I don't know anyone who has used it.

Makes sense - I'm thinking of getting the complete set up listed here.

Have you seen anything similar? Seems like a low cost way to get a portable dust collection system that is 95% as good as a dust collector. I'm similar to you, in that my shop requires portability at this stage.

It looks fine - this looks like one of those things only the owner would notice. It will be in the sun and change over time anyway, I wouldn't sweat it.

I read that last summer and enjoyed House of Suns by Alistair Reynolds afterwards. A great recently released book!

Seared Scallops w/ Arugula Pesto served with roasted beets and sweet potatoes by FishTacosin Paleo

[–]FishTacos[S] 0 points1 point ago

Sure! It's very simple as the ingredients are so good.

I sauteed the beet greens in some bacon fat w/ a couple cloves of garlic for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently until the leaves were tender. I just chopped the greens off the beets I bought, washed 'em, and threw them in the pan.

For the beets/sweet potatoes, I peeled equal parts of both and chopped into 3/4" chunks. I tossed in a baking dish with some olive oil (I should have used coconut or butter I guess) and plenty of salt and pepper. Then I roasted at 425 deg. for about 18 minutes, stirring once. Salt and pepper to taste after.

The scallops are super easy, I patted them dry, melted some butter in a cast iron pan on medium-high, and added them in making sure there was enough room. I put in about 10 in a 10-inch pan. 2-3 mins on each side, no more. You just want a nice buttery crust. The key here is NOT salting the scallops before you cook them, as they will get rid of their awesome liquid that gives them flavor. Cook first in butter, then salt on the dish to taste afterwards.

The Arugula pesto is just arugula from our garden with Walnuts, parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and olive oil blended in the food processor. My wife made that so I don't know the ratios.

Hope that helps! I kind of made this up as I went along, so don't have a formal recipe. The not salting the scallops tip really helped.
