TROPHY CASE

Jay Leno uses YouTube video without permission, then has it blocked for copyright infringement by harmalain WTF

[–]Fauster 0 points1 point ago

Who cares? If DMCA takedowns make a show/performer intensely disliked, maybe NBC will be careful about DMCA takedowns. And if Jay Leno can pull a youtube video and make it part of his show as fair use, we should be able to do the same.

It was a joke about a Woody Harrelson AMA. Woody refused to answer any questions that weren't about "Rampart", a movie in which he plays a corrupt LA cop. This was the most disastrous AMA in the history of reddit. Thanks for doing your AMA, btw!

South Korea to Chemically Castrate Repeat Child Rapist by PrinceDakkarin worldnews

[–]Fauster 11 points12 points ago

I saw a 60 minutes years ago that noted most imprisoned for child rape had testosterone levels that are standard deviations outside the norm. How is correcting this disorder after heinous crimes less humane than imprisoning someone where they will probably be beaten and raped for decades?

It was a cult city, so the massacre was apropo. In cults, people are taught to hate their family in order to follow the cult leader. Also, cult members are encouraged to leave their wives and children without saying goodbye, or saying where they went. Also, cults worship gods that aren't real.

What's wrong with tacos? And why should we assume this subreddit is judgmental and puritanical if a post plays off an alcohol meme?

In around 120 years, every person currently alive will be dead, and the earth will be completely populated with people that have not yet been born. What other inevitable facts about the future do you think about? by diddletapflamdiddlein AskReddit

Yeah, but the kind of universe this is, is the kind of universe that allowed people like you to be. You can despair over the fact that there are over a 100 billion galaxies, each with over a hundred billion stars that last 4 billion years, each with many planets (according to recent data from the Kepler telescope). Or, you can know that as forever alone as you are at a particular point in space and time, any experience you have is shared and repeated with countless entities over the very long course of time. For every sand-painting erased, when averaged, approximately one is created.

Do you think facebook's price/earnings ratio 80 (4x Googles') is a fair valuation? Revenue is 5 times earnings, so it doesn't seem unreasonable that to get facebook down to a p/e of 40 if facebook's revenue increases 20%. On the other hand, is there evidence that people are actually spending more time on facebook, or less? I think facebook will see more revenue per user as web stuff goes in a more video-centric direction. However, I personally browse the site much, much, less frequently than when it was relatively new.

What happened to Moore's law tracking CPU frequencies? by rezinballin buildapc

[–]Fauster -1 points0 points ago

The reason for limited thermal performance is that electrons scatter more when wavelengths associated with the electron wave function are on the same scale as the gates. Also, tunneling becomes more of a problem at these length scales. Electron scattering (bouncing off of) an impurity causes heating because electrons are massive particles with a significant momentum. The electron imparts its energy to the impurity in the form of heat.

When CPUs use graphene, we should see a 10-fold jump in CPU clock frequencies, because this material is a better conductor that scatters electrons less. Further down the road, classical optical computation may provide a more energy-efficient way compute since photons are massless particles with relatively low momentum. But there are many challenges associated with using light for computation; one is that you can't hold light on a capacitor like you can with electrons.

Verizon Wireless to scrap unlimited plans for 4G users by Fausterin technology

What I would like to do is buy a used 4G phone, and upgrade my 3G unlimited contract to 4G immediately, without signing a new contract. Is it even possible to upgrade now from 3G to 4G when I have 5 months left on my contract?

My plan had been to upgrade to 4G unlimited, then buy used smartphones over ebay for the rest of my life. This way I wouldn't be forced to sign a new tiered contract. I currently exceed 5 gigs per month on 3G, and they start throttling when I hit the secret cap, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than their tiered plans. From what I've gleaned so far, they currently plan to hit you with tiered contracts if you upgrade your phone, so I would "never upgrade."

I have a 3G plan; if I switch to a 4G plan before this change, will I be grandfathered in for 2 years only, or perpetually?
