In a worst case scenario: get on a stem cell trial waiting list ASAP. It is highly probable that this disease will be very treatable soon. And don't assume you have it for sure unless they see a clear progression. Keep your head up! Everything is going to be okay.

[–]Fauster 2 points3 points ago

Exactly; I have yet to see the good, solid, reasonable, religious arguments that are unfairly being downvoted in atheism. People reflexively seem to assume this is the case. Just as people reflexively invoke argument from false symmetry and say: "atheism is just has bad as fundamentalism because I'm annoyed by each when they promote their beliefs, AMIrite?"

He assumes atheist beliefs spring not from reason, but from hatred, like his own prejudices. Furthermore, he assumes that this supposed hatred must be so intense that we align with all other groups he hates. "Why doesn't /r/atheism ever bash Islam?" is probably the most commonly upvoted misconception on reddit.

UI still sub-par 2 years later. Why don't we care? by Shwyxxin starcraft

[–]Fauster 0 points1 point ago

No I mean, I open a replay in my download folder, I like it, (most are crap), I'd like to save it in a replay directory without going to Library/ApplicationSupport/Blizzard/StarcraftII/coredump/.../.../.../.../Replays/, this way I could play it again without having to look for it or take a bunch of time saving it to the right place. And I should't have to make shortcuts for software that's unintelligently designed.

UI still sub-par 2 years later. Why don't we care? by Shwyxxin starcraft

[–]Fauster 14 points15 points ago

I hate the fact that if I watch a replay, it's not obvious how/where to save it before I quit the replay. And on a mac I have to put replays in a library sub-sub-sub directory so arcane that I have to google it every time I want to save a replay. And I'm pissed that there's no back button. Click multiplayer, and suddenly want to take another look at the army graph that I was just on, and I have to make a ton of clicks to get back. And, the default homescreen is on the campaign, and accidentally clicking the continue button, instead of "find match", means waiting forever for it load before I quit out of it. And it's a pain in the ass for me to find that one cool custom map/game that I played the other day if it's not at the top of popular.

As much as I loved Stringer, I was glad that he got killed instead of pinched, so thanks! And my favorite scene in The Wire was one where stringer was talking and framed with a metal dish on the wall behind his head that looked halo-like. I can remember getting a poignant sinking feeling when I saw it.

Thanks for everything. The Wire is still the best show in history, and the world is a slightly better place because so many people watched it. I also love Treme.

Fighting for the approval of medical use of a drug is a very good step towards legalization for many reasons. Pot is likely on the verge of legalization because of initial efforts to approve its medical use in states over two decades ago. George Soros and Peter Lewis met with California legalization advocates and told them they were only inclined to bankroll initiatives that had a chance of passing, and public opinion was much favorable for allowing medical use of a drug, allowing medical use in California in 1996. Once medical use of a drug is accepted, old people especially are less inclined to demonize it, and group it with ugly drugs like meth and heroin. Finally, in principle, the accepted medical use of a drug should get it off schedule I. The DEA is fighting this, but at least they'll soon have to justify their logic in court.

It would be nice to all inner city drug dealers and Mexican cartels out of business overnight, and cut our record prison population by more than half, by legalizing and taxing most drugs for which there is significant demand. However, public opinion is currently tilted against a logical and humane policy. So piecemeal legalization efforts are the most effective way to gain ground and change public opinion.

"I'm not concerned about the very poor." - Mitt Romney, after his Florida win. by ropeyhodgesin politics

[–]Fauster 1 point2 points ago

I wasn't arguing that goverment money isn't wasted (half your tax dollars go to the military), simply that the tax burden now, relative to the tax burden in 1980, was shifted away from the wealthy, and towards the middle class. The wealthy, of course, pay a large share of the total taxes in the country, because the bottom 80% of Americans, individuals making less than 90 grand a year, only own 7% of America's wealth.

Some do mistakenly argue that the wealthy are better creators of American jobs. However, every cent of a poor person's income reenters the US economy in a hurry. Rich people, however, can afford to buy luxury foreign products and stocks (helping other economies). Also the rich can afford to stockpile money for years or generations, which doesn't instantly boost consumer spending.

Additionally, the old argument that the rich should be taxed less because they're smarter investors is dubious. Most large mutual funds run by the richest and smartest investors don't outperform the S&P 500, meaning a random investment in the index will do better.

The rich didn't get huge tax cuts in the first place because people argued they were taxed unfairly. The rich got tax cuts because people argued it would help the economy. However, past experience indicates that the economy does better when the very richest are taxed at a higher rate. In the Reagan era, the GOP argued that the economy would grow so fast if the rich are taxed less, total government income would increase. However, trickle down economics is now widely discredited. Economies like the US don't experience the 5-10% yearly growth that would be needed to make up for lost revenue.

"I'm not concerned about the very poor." - Mitt Romney, after his Florida win. by ropeyhodgesin politics

[–]Fauster 18 points19 points ago

If he doesn't care about the rich why is he so upset at the idea of returning income and capital gains taxes to Reagan-era levels? In contrast, his statement about not caring about the poor is believable.

Any wonton Recipes? by Pastlife123in Cooking

[–]Fauster 0 points1 point ago

First, mince some onions (you're supposed to use shallots), and ginger, more ginger if you want it more spicy. Then mince some ground pork. I also throw minced garlic and pepper into the equation. Mix it up in a bowl, and add soy sauce, the amount depending on your salt tolerance. It definitely shouldn't be runny.

If you want to fry potstickers in vegetable oil, often with leftover wontons because they stay moist longer, seal the meat tightly. Have a little water bowl beside your plate and wet the edges of the wontons with your finger where you want them to stick. It's probably easiest to use chopsticks to put the filling inside, because you only use one hand. If you're doing wonton soup, don't make an impermeable seal, because you want some of the filling to escape into the broth. If the meat isn't tender and only recently not-pink, you're cooking the wontons too long; it should only take a few minutes. When I'm feeling cheap, or running low on meat I put in a tiny bit of minced cabbage filling too, and it still tastes great. I'm trying to eat fewer intelligent animals, so I've also filled wontons with minced cod or clams (minus their stomachs), and they still taste like wontons. Also, I've used normal white and yellow onions too, though this is apparently very not kosher. It tastes great to me.

Also, you can freeze the wrappers for a little while if they're tightly wrapped in plastic. And freezing ground pork isn't such a disaster either, so you can always have the mixings for wontons in your freezer.

You'll be amazed at how cheap, easy and tasty chinese appetizers are. I eat potstickers on rice all the time, and chop them up a little to flavor the rice. Potstickers are awesome because you can make a big batch with rice and eat them for lunch the next day.
