If you're interested in the Philosophy of Science I HIGHLY recommend Alex Rosenberg's "Philosophy of Science" as an introductory book. If you want to skip the introduction and find out right now why science isn't really 'the way' (not in the way you thought it was, anyways) then I'd pick up Thomas Kuhn's 'The Structure of Scientific Revolutions.' It is one of the most influential texts in any field in the 20th century, and really, really interesting. Beyond that, read about phlogiston and the luminiferous aether and mull over the consequences of ideas like that on 'science as a search for truth'

This may well not be an option, but if you've got a friend or relative who's a LEO they can get you LEO pricing on one. I've pretty much decided on a 26 as well, and I've got a cousin who can get it for ~$350.
