Is it common for Americans to not take their shoes off when entering a house? by rowdyonthevexin AskReddit

Really? Is walking that hard? I'm pretty damn sure what's on the bottom of my shoes when I come inside.

I'm in New England, and everyone I know leaves their shoes on. I think the fact that hard wood floors are so common makes shoes more common. Those floors get damn cold in the winter months and even socks won't cut it.

The floors would get incredibly dirty...

Not really. Look at the bottoms of your shoes some time. If you spend most of your time walking around on pavement, or in your car, you're not going to have much dirt at all on your shoes. If you go out and mow your lawn and have grass and mud all over you, then yeah, you might want to take your shoes off, but otherwise, they don't really track in much dirt.

This question has actually been asked quite a few times here, but yes, it is very common for Americans to not remove their shoes inside. As a New Englander, I can say that in the winters (and fall... and early spring too), with hard wood and tile floors, they get really cold so it's easier to leave your shoes on. Plus, any time you go into the basement, you're going to need something on your feet, and wearing slippers all day looks silly. Plus, in the summers, I tend to be back and forth between inside and out, so it's just a time saver to keep my shoes on all the time. As long as their clean, it's no big deal.

That I surely say.

I'm not sure what is wrong with him.

But at least he isn't gay.

But is he really an asshole from the ethical and moral perspective? He's essentially saying the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Is he an asshole for valuing the good of all of society over the good of the individual?

And this is someone who has never worked on a real-time system. Sure, memcpy isn't going to be the cause of exceptional performance, but it will be added performance. In many real-time systems, microseconds matter.

We do fairly often at work because there are a lot of people with common names, so it's just clearer to use the last name.

And not just programmers. You need to learn to be a software engineer, where you manage teams of programmers and provide the overall design for your products.

See, here's the problem. $80k in Silicon Valley is like $40k in most other parts of the country. You have to take locality into account when comparing starting salaries.

Unless you're in Silicon Valley or somewhere like that, $95k is a pretty high starting salary for a software engineer.

Why in the world would you buy a $277K home for just you and your girlfriend? Are you an idiot?

I bought a $325k house for just me an my wife. I'm kind of concerned a mortgage banker doesn't realize how drastically housing prices can vary based on locality. If he lives in rural Kentucky, $277k would buy a mansion. If he lives in San Fransisco, it would buy a shack.

If she doesn't know ballpark how much you have in savings, then you probably aren't in a place where you should buy a house. Unless you're seriously, 100% going to marry this girl, this is a terrible idea. My wife and I only bought a house after we got engaged. Getting out of a joint mortgage with your girlfriend would be almost as bad as getting divorced.

To be fair, there are far more Republican politicians who come out against gay marriage. I can't think of any Democrats off the top of my head who campaign on the issue of denying gay men and women the right to marry. I can think of quite a few Republicans however.

This:

Michele Bachmann: “If you’re involved in the gay and lesbian lifestyle, it’s bondage. It is personal bondage, personal despair and personal enslavement.”

and this:

dsarola: "None of those are bigoted comments..."

and this:

Wikipedia: "Bigotry is the state of mind of a "bigot", a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one who exhibits intolerance or animosity toward members of a group."

Really?! None of those comments are bigoted? Do you not know what the word means?
