...Except, maybe you could try some VST synths. There are lots of good free ones out there, check kvraudio.com (site seems to be down at the moment btw)

You'll need a midi keyboard and interface, or use a virtual keyboard (see simple vst host) and some sort of asio capable sound card. Or try asio4all as a low latency driver: http://www.asio4all.com/

I've tried (among many other things) eq-ing out all the 'redundant' frequncies and compressing all the dynamics out. But as soon as the recordings are converted to uLaw (hardware) everythings sounds horrible. So I'm guessing there is not much I can do about it.
