How do I tell my love ones I am dying? by IamDieingin AskReddit

[–]Diabolus_Advocatus 1 point2 points ago

I'd imagine you'd be pretty keen to learn about an injury that left you paralyzed for two years, wouldn't you? You'd have plenty of time to think "why did this happen to me" and "whats going to happen in the future". Patients may not always find the correct information, but they certainly go hunting around.

Sure, biology is a variable science - but the collection of symptoms described here doesn't describe any known brain injury (except for, perhaps, dementia) or a realistic mechanism of injury.

I'm sorry, but absolutely nothing you're describing makes any sense from a medical perspective.

If you had actually severed your cord at the level of C1 you'd be dead. Partial lesions would very likely leave you quadriplegic and dependent on a ventilator, and motor recovery would be unlikely.

Occlusive strokes resulting from a vertebral artery would leave you with a specific set of symptoms you don't seem to mention here, and hemorrhagic strokes can't occur at the level of the neck.

Arterial dissection occurs from within the artery, to the inner layers of the arterial wall - I see no way for your vertebral disk to have caused that sort of injury.

If you had a clot in your vertebral artery treatment is (relatively) simple, and your suggestion that removing it would route too much pressure to your brain simply doesn't reflect how the vasculature in the brain works.

Could you provide us with MRI scans or some sort of proof? Its odd that two years of paralysis didn't spur you to learn about a medical condition which has deeply impacted your life. Something doesn't add up.

Update: In the middle of March I was sitting at a red light and was rear-ended in a hit-and-run where the other car left an imprint of their license on my bumper and reddit figured out the plate number. by BunsOfAluminumin AskReddit

I'm late as shit, but as a seriously crappy driver I've learned 3 important things when it comes to totaling a vehicle (and you probably don't know the second two): not-so-ninja edit: OP, read #3. The first two have been covered a couple times but #3 has not.

  • 1. Contact a personal injury lawyer. They work on % of damages won, so it wont cost you anything until you have a settlement to pay for it. If you're in real pain, a lawyer can help you get a settlement of substantial value - way way way more than the pittance you'll get from the insurance company (their goal is to pay you as little as possible - you need someone to fight for your interests).
  • 2. Don't accept the offer on your car - counteroffer. I had no idea this could be done, but the last accident I was in the insurance company offered me $9k for my car, which was less than market value. My lawyer wrote them back a letter with comparable cars (even taking into consideration things like new tires), and their offer went up to $14.5k two weeks later. If you really insist on not getting a lawyer, find some templates or pay a legal assistant to draft you something, it'll be worth it.
  • 3. Often times your insurance contract offers you the first right to purchase the vehicle back - and you'll be buying it as scrap, so they're basically charging you for the metal its made from. In a different accident, I had my car totaled out, got paid $5k for the car by the insurance company, bought it back from them as scrap for $300, then RE-SOLD the car on ebay as-is with a salvage title for $3k to some guys who used it for parts. Ta-da, money doubled.

Close! Increased bilirubin is the pathological marker of jaundice and causes the skin to yellow, but its not the cause. In newborns, the cause is increased hemoglobin turnover (as fetal Hb is replaced with adult) coupled with a liver that isn't fully developed (the liver conjugates bilirubin, making it water soluble and allowing it to leave in the urine).

The light is actually ultraviolet, and works by changing the trans- conformation to cis-, which is more water soluble.

[–]Diabolus_Advocatus 0 points1 point ago

The advice is all valid, but its unlikely you'd enter REM during a nap - it takes several hours for most adults to enter into REM, and it occurs mostly towards the early morning hours. Nappers would be more likely to hover in the earlier stages of sleep.

I don't know about that actually - I don't think reddit was ever supposed to be for any particular demographic. That an older crowd was initially drawn to it is more a result of the simple layout than anything else, and its likely that the owner of reddit would rather attract as broad a demographic as possible to the site, which almost never means targeting intelligent people (they're harder to advertise to). There will invariably be a wide range of capability and understanding in an open internet forum, and in one where popularity wins out its unlikely the smartest posts will rise to the top. That said, r/askscience is pretty awesome for well thought out intellectual discussion.

Biological science is a mystery to a lot of people; exposure to unique stories like these may spark their interest and contribute to their better understanding of the machinery of life.

No, progeria is a condition that severely reduces life span.

And sadly, its not really a start to any new discoveries - any suggestions to the contrary are more for the benefit of making the show exciting than anything else. Even though she failed to develop, her aging, at least on a cellular level, is progressing at a completely normal pace.

The longer the better

Well, sort of. The degeneration of telomeres is a hallmark of cell line aging, but generally activation of the cellular machinery that lengthens telomeres is associated with cancer. Cancer is essentially a group of cells that out-compete their neighbors to the detriment of the host, so longer isn't always what you'd hope for.

American Crew Fiber is good stuff, but you seriously have to try Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shaping Cream. I was a fiber user before my hair dresser turned me on the the tea tree stuff - it leaves zero gloss so it looks like you're not wearing any product, but it has an incredible amount of 'influence' over stubborn hairs. Best part is, since its a very firm 'dry' product, sweeping your hands through after a windy morning can fix you up back to new. I'm usually not such a product whore but I'm in love... plus I'm still on my original 3.5oz container from 2 years ago, so I doubt Paul M is getting too rich off me :P

Jesus, what is with everyone and their horror at your story? That animal was going to die. You killed it in the most humane way possible. You had the completely delicious and slightly hysterical idea of making him into dinner. You had the compassion to not be able to eat your friend. Everything went completely right here.
