I think the amount of force behind the attacks matters. Fire can get as hot as it wants while water can only get so cold. But if there is more water being directed than there is air for it to vaporize with (in contact with fire), then there will be an amount of superheated water headed toward Ho-oh. Just speculatin'.

I only watched half of Brotherhood but the 'funny' moments seemed too out of place or forced (this was back when it aired, my opinion is subject to change on rewatching after all this time).

Having watched the full first anime, I would say it's definitely worth watching. It's a bit darker at least in the way it ends too. At least that way, one can appreciate it for that or if they don't like it as much they can say they've got the manga canon material to look forward to in Brotherhood.

I don't think a camera works too differently than a human eye (as far as focus goes). So if there are multiple light sources, you will see the ones you are focusing on as dots, and the ones that are still in your range of vision but are not being focused on, as big and blurry.
