Probably an opening of some sort at the front of the vehicle for the shotgun to fire through - likely letting mud in as well. Would explain why its localized on and around where the shotgun barrel is mounted.

Actually, it looks like there is a plunger connecting the trigger to a box with wires conencted to it - best bet is there is an electrictally operated solenoid in there that pulls the trigger in response to a button or switch, probably inside the car.

It looks like a Remington 1100 - 12Ga Semi-auto shotgun. That's not a paintball marker. Also, it looks like its empty since the action is locked in the back position.
