Does anyone know any good study/work spots in New Orleans? by rcaraw1in NewOrleans

Go up to the the third floor of the library. The first floor has been designated as a "work area" which is now fairly loud. The 3rd floor however, is really quiet.

I am 100% offended that Tulane is on this map. As a mod of /r/Tulane, I can safely say that there is no such thing as a Tulane Football Fan in New Orleans.

[–]Darthfuzzy 0 points1 point ago

Absolutely. I definitely agree that there is an issue that needs to be addressed. The early evening ones are the ones that I believe shows there is a problem, and I don't disagree with you that something needs to be done.

However, looking at the times of the last crime reports since September of 2011 you'll notice something:

1/20/12: 9:20PM 1/19/12: 2:30AM - LBC Quad 1/10/12: 3:08AM 12/6/11: 7:40PM 12/1/11: 12:05PM 11/26/11: 9:45PM 11/21/11: 11:05PM 10/11/11: 1:50AM 10/4/11: 12:39AM 9/18/11: 6:00AM

70% (7/10) of the crimes have happened in times that I would classify as being issues of students having seriously poor judgment.

The students "waiting for SafeRide" happened on 12/1/11 at 12:17AM and was a Loyola Student (not discrediting that based on school). This is an issue in how Tulane/Loyola promotes SafeRide. They offer it, and it takes them forever to get to locations because of how it operates. I have known people who stand out on the corner waiting for SafeRide for 40+ minutes. That is a target waiting to happen. If you call SafeRide, DO NOT STAND ON THE CORNER AT 12 IN THE MORNING. SafeRide needs to be reworked to ensure that it doesn't happen again (I'm not even sure call backs does the job).

Now then, what I'm going to say might sound completely disingenuous and disrespectful but its a harsh reality: The article is sensationalist in that it clumps all the crime reports together and doesn't acknowledge that a majority of these cases shows a recklessness that students don't want to accept. You should not be drunk and wandering around New Orleans at 3am. Period. The people who get robbed at 7:40pm and 9:30am shows a problem with crime there. But, that would be 4 crimes in almost 5 months vs. the 12-14 we've had because of the 'I want to party and I should be safe partying at 3am!' mentality. There should be a check list in the mind of students that seems to be absent. Stayed at a friends house until 3am? Maybe I should ask for a ride home instead of walking half a mile around sketchy neighborhoods. Should I stay out until 4am alone at Snake and Jakes? No, I should go back with my friends at 11pm. (This is the biggest one) Oh, I don't need a ride, I only live like 5 blocks away and have made it back safely before (but in actuality its like 10-12 blocks away)!

I'm 100% in favor of people having a good time, and I'm 100% in favor of there needing something to be done. But the problem doesn't 100% lie in the fault of TUPD or NOPD. It lies in the fact that SOME Tulane students want to go out and party at 3am and expect it to not be a risk. Tulane cannot tell officers to go patrol all of uptown, nor they afford it. By telling officers to expand their patrol routes, Tulane becomes less safe because it means that officers are now spread out. That's really the problem. Tulane needs to also increase patrols not just at the "peak partying hours" but honestly at the hours which you are afraid of, i.e. 7-9pm and 6-9am. These are the hours that Tulane neglects because those are actually the hours in which TUPD has shifts.

tl;dr: There is a problem, and I don't disagree with you. However, the problem exists in two ways: (a) TUPD needs to increase hours at the hours of concern (early morning and early evening) and (b) Students need to be more aware and less risky at 3 in the morning.

Jezebel: Tulane University Students Invoke “Widespread Rape” in Calling for Increased Off-Campus Security by thankmerlinin Tulane

[–]Darthfuzzy 5 points6 points ago*

Besides, you know who the greatest threat to residents of the 9th ward is? Residents of the 9th ward. Who's the greatest threat to university-area uptown? Anyone not from university-area uptown. You think it's offensive to the rest of the city that we want our personal army to step their shit up? Well I think it's very fucking offensive that the rest of the city can wander over here and assault our students and neighbors. Take the liberal guilt down a notch, our folks are getting raped and such.

The comments made by Matteo Nagelberg have since been removed from the site altogether.

I talked to someone who was involved with the campaign a few days ago. Glad they listened to me in saying that that shit was the most offensive thing I've read in a long time and does nothing but make it sound like all Tulane students are snotty nose brats with the "daddy daddy please make the crime go away" mentality.

Despite that, the one crime that shows a major problem was the mugging that ACTUALLY happened on the LBC Quad. The other shit has a constant trend: If you go out drinking and return to your house at 4am in the morning, you are gambling with your life and your property. Seriously, every crime report (except for a few like the break-ins) have been after 12am and before 6am.

I feel like that should be clarified to every student. No place in ALL of New Orleans is safe at those hours, and uptown is no exception. However, there has been an increase in crime and something needs to be done about it. The solution is a lot more complex than just more TUPD officers or more NOPD patrols because NOPD can't afford it and I wouldn't trust TUPD with anything. They couldn't even stop my car from being jacked in their own fucking parking garage.

This. Tulane doesn't understand the concept of the interwebs. Try using the internet in Norman Mayer or Tilton Hall around 3pm any day of the week during class and you'll want to throw your computer out the window.

Because I'm sure people are curious, I haven't typed in all the games (there's over a few hundred). But the current count on consoles is:

  • 2 N64
  • 1 Xbox
  • 2 Xbox 360s
  • 1 Sega Genesis II
  • 1 Sega Genesis I
  • 1 SNES
  • 1 NES
  • 2 Sega Dreamcasts
  • 1 PS2
  • 1 PS1
  • 1 Gamecube
  • 1 NeoGeo Pocket

For shits and giggles the most notable stuff:

  • NES Advantage Arcade Pad
  • Hey You Pikachu Game and Microphone
  • Pokemon Stadium with 2 Gameboy to Controller Adapters
  • Several terrible off brand controllers
  • A Calico Cat
  • 3 Still in wrapper copies of Sneak King, Pocketbike Racer, and Big Bumpin'

I'll post the final list when I finish it. I have two brothers, and when we were growing up we could never share so my parents always bought 3 copies of the most popular games/consoles. I was the only one smart enough to save mine over the past 22 years. I always told them they were stupid to throw away the cases/leave the games around. So I decided to search around the house for left over stuff...there's still about 3-4 boxes worth of consoles/games at my parent's house which I'll eventually get to.

I too suffer from the Pizza Dough demon. I can never get it right.

Not only that, but I have a really hard time getting the dough to conform to the pan. It ALWAYS will retract. If I am able to get it to stretch it out enough (after about 40 minutes of fighting it with my knuckles) it ends up being WAY too thick after baking.

I really want to perfect the pizza crust but it just seems to be my kryptonite.

If I gave you $100,000 cash right now, what business would you start? by MumbleGrumblein Entrepreneur

[–]Darthfuzzy 0 points1 point ago

Manufacturing a few product ideas that I have. One is a very local New Orleans based product that has never been produced but is sure to make $100,000 into $300,000 within four financial quarters. It's a kid product and for the amount of kids that come here with their parents, it's quite ridiculous that it hasn't been done yet. I don't want to say what it is because someone can easily take the idea.

Needless to say that 100,000 would go towards development, prototype production and then front the cost of the initial production line to be sold to the small "tourist shops" which would then be expanded to an entire product line based off of the initial concept of providing a "New Orleans" experience for kids that can be taken home.
