What are some of the first things you install/change/configure after a fresh 12.04 install? by uvtcin Ubuntu

[–]Crazy_Hair_Week 1 point2 points ago

A lot of people don't know this, but close to all generic laptop touch-pads support artificial two-finger scrolling and such a la Mac.

#!/bin/bash
xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Synaptics Two-Finger Pressure" 32 10
xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Synaptics Two-Finger Width" 32 6
xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Two-Finger Scrolling" 8 1
xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Synaptics Two-Finger Scrolling" 8 1 1
xinput set-int-prop "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" "Synaptics Jumpy Cursor Threshold" 32 150
xinput set-button-map "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" 1 2 3 5 4 7 6 8 9 10 11 12

Then put it into startup programs and set Firefox to smooth scrolling and you're good!

Two-finger scrolling just makes everything so much easier.

It's actually a really short loop. Look at the reflection of the gear in the upper right hand corner.

ReFs, the successor to NTFS in Windows 8 by c0balt279in programming

[–]Crazy_Hair_Week 14 points15 points ago

Not exactly. A singular file will pretty much have the same speeds performance wise across any filesystem type. That's all on the disk I/O. The relevance of the filesystem speedwise is on the directories with lots of files inside. So really, it's more of the fact that finding, creating, and writing to a bunch of different files (and when it comes to building software, it can get up into the thousands), is slower and more roundabout on an NTFS system than a continuous virtualized ext partition.

When it comes to virtualization, if the hard disk image is not fragmented and has a static size, then there will be close to no hit in performance depending on the virtualization software and how it handles I/O. VMWare Player is pretty reasonable about this.

UPDATE: how can I get rid of my crazy flatmate? by flat_hell_throwawayin AskReddit

It's not a notice to quit. It's a lease renewal. Hell, the landlord could've told her the day of renewal that she couldn't stay there anymore. And even for eviction notices, only a month's notice is required.

Just make sure that you don't get any "lite" or children's formula toothpaste, but other than that, you should be good for the ride!

GNOME 3.6 is getting serious with Initial System Setup by r_schestowitzin gnome

[–]Crazy_Hair_Week 4 points5 points ago

The official extension API is much less of an API than it is an editable runtime. There are a couple of unofficial APIs that developers have put together that are fairly well thought out, though.

I know, but it's still wrong. Gnome 3 has an active javascript runtime and theming abilities, but no direct API, so trying to customize it, or the injecting extensions on the Gnome page are a bad workaround at best. Compiz has a complete API, and in general Unity provides many hooks into Compiz, so it's much more of an actual customizable core than the workarounds that Gnome 3 provides.

Like I said, I like both pretty much equally, and I think Gnome 3 is a smoother experience, but Unity is more mature when it comes to customizability.

Well even then, if you're including extensions and plugins to the base, then Unity is still far more configurable, considering the huge amount of Compiz and Unity plugins/tweakers floating around. I run both, and I like both, but Unity wins hands down in customizability, even if there are other DE's that are much more customizable than the both of them.

Vanilla Gnome 3 is not nearly as configurable as Unity. Gnome 2/Mate and Cinnamon are more configurable than Unity. But Unity still gives a fair amount of control over the desktop, especially through Compiz configuration. More multi-monitor control, ability to change the UI, better theme support, pressure control on the launcher, and packages indicator install are some of the things off the top of my head that Unity supports, but not Gnome 3.

TIL Superfluid Helium-4 can leak through glass, climb over walls, and has zero friction by godulousin todayilearned

[–]Crazy_Hair_Week 0 points1 point ago

Basically, you measure it indirectly through heat indices. You record the exact temperature of another object, or possibly a liquid, submerge the absolute zero object, and record the diffusion of heat throughout. With careful conditions, you should be able to tell whether it was absolute zero or not.

Since we don't know much about how things act when their molecules stop vibrating, we might be able to just observe what happens, if the chemical make-up of the object changes when it hits zero.

You wouldn't be able to measure through any conventional means, though. Pictures require light, but shining light on the object will just cause the light energy to get soaked up into the object. Vibration or radar wouldn't work either, because the mechanical energy would also get sucked up. A thermometer wouldn't work, because the heat from the thermometer would get diffused into the zero object.

Kinda, but not quite. It's actually near frictionless, not completely, so eventually, it would have to stop. But more realistically, a huge amount of outside factors will still stop it. It would have to be put in a perfect vacuum, no absolute motion distortion design, etc. Also, it isn't absolute zero, just cool enough for it to go superfluid. Absolute zero for any substance has yet to be achieved, if it's even possible.

Besides, perpetual motion in a sense isn't too amazing or surprising. This would just be the first example of perpetual motion in a gravitational environment. I could go to space and spin a wheel, and watch it spin forever if nothing acted on it, but it would still technically be perpetual motion. Perpetual machines that could still give off energy as it moves have been a long-time science rumor/joke that is impossible by our laws of physics.
