Roasted Tomato Caprese Grilled Cheese by emilymorsein recipes

[–]ContentFarmer 0 points1 point ago

Made this one last night on sourdough. It was outstanding.

I had two. The first one was delicious even though I'd forgotten to use the balsamic reduction. I corrected my error on the second one. It blew my socks off.

Is "How come?" proper English? by nikolatesla86in grammar

[–]ContentFarmer 4 points5 points ago

It's been touched on here, but it isn't proper English in the sense that you could use it in any formal settings. It derives from "How did this become," and has become a commonly--colloquially--accepted shorthand.

I wouldn't use it in your dissertation.

Why the Party Is Ending For the Rich by giggsgonshinein economy

[–]ContentFarmer 1 point2 points ago

Sure we could...it's just that the companies with the infrastructure and capabilities (like Boeing, for example), don't really know the first thing about making trains.

I think it's a fantastic idea. The US infrastructure, health care, and education systems are an absolute joke in the 1st world--it's just that there aren't too many direct correlations between what we currently produce and what we need to produce.

Not only that, but the existing MIC companies have a strong financial foothold with today's politicians. Boeing doesn't give two damns about the highway system or high-speed rail...not when they can get $60 million for a new fighter jet that will need to be replaced in less than 10 years.

Reduce new military expenditures on hardware and programs to a placeholder (or simply cut them outright), while maintaining employment levels.

The only problem with this is that all of those gun and truck and airplane makers employ a lot of people. Maintaining soldiers as a peacekeeping force is one thing, but endless war is good for the economy. The US military only directly employes soldiers, but there are millions of jobs created to fill the demand the military supplies. As horrible as the MIC seems (and none of us like it), the majority of those trillions and trillions of dollars are going right back into American households.

Are teachers in high school and below not allowed to be addressed by their first name by students? by DrSloanin education

[–]ContentFarmer 8 points9 points ago

Nobody said anything about teachers not respecting students. Respect is always a two-way street in a classroom. But going by Mr. is a cue for my students to respect me as an authority figure. It's our other actions that lead students to respect us as mentors, or subject matter experts, or whatever the case may be.

And I don't buy for a second that students having to respect teachers as authority figure in any way teaches they "are not people capable of being respectful and responsible on their own" or that they are "lesser than their teachers".

Insisting to be called Mr., other than by my first name is simply a social cue. It's the same sort of social cue that's been present in society for thousands of years. There is a hierarchy in the classroom, and just because students are not at the top of that hierarchy doesn't mean that they are in any way disrespected.

It's a different relationship. As a student who's in University you understand teacher/student roles. You are in University largely because you understand this relationship.

Also, in University you begin to concentrate on a subject area. You begin to become an expert. The process of a university education is about transforming you from a student to a professional. A student to a colleague.

It's an issue of respect. I always thought that I'd allow students to call me by my first name, but it blurs a line.

I'm all for informality, but allowing students to call you by your first name gives them unconscious permission to push other boundaries. There always needs to be a wall of respect.

Because it still sells DVD copies. I think that's the reason many shows aren't on instant.
