Yes, that is one definition of faith. It can simply mean hope or trust, but you were making this definition of faith synonymous with religious faith, which is incorrect. Many words have several definitions that aren't synonymous and require context (see: theory).

I think this is a common misconception. My parents argued, "You have faith every time you get in a plane. Faith that everything is going to be okay and the pilot will bring you down safely." Wrong. That isn't faith. I know from past events that the probability that I will be okay is very high.

With respect to your example, you have empirical data that supports your claim that he will come out alive. From your observations, you have REASONED that there is a high probability that he will come out alive.

"I don't smoke." vs. "I don't smoke, I'm in the military."

The second is clearly a pussy.

Even if I wasn't in the military, I still wouldn't. It's a good excuse not to smoke though when people ask if you want to, they almost never question it.

As long as you are doing Kafka, I would recommend "In the Penal Colony." It's even shorter than Metamorphosis and in my opinion a more enjoyable story.

What was the most influential piece of evidence or event that made you finally realize you didn't believe in god and/or religion? by hurler_jonesin atheism

Finally realizing that god would have had to put all that evidence for evolution there just to trick us into believing it.

What is the closest you have gotten to getting a person to question their beliefs? by CitizenFordin atheism

People definitely look at you differently once they find out. I do live in the evangelical Christian capital of America though (Colorado Springs). Here, everyone assumes you are a Christian unless you state otherwise.

Interesting, at 23 years old I am still yet to meet an open atheist.
