First Cedarburg Flea Market of the season this Sunday! by Carpenterdonin wisconsin

I'll be there. If you see a guy pushing or pulling a cart with an orange triangular flag, remember to ask when the narwhal bacons.

NYC cyclist protests unfair fines by doing EXACTLY what the officer tells him to do. Hilarity ensues. by employedhipsterin videos

[–]Carpenterdon 2 points3 points ago

Or he could have simply asked to see the statute that says it is illegal to ride on a street outside of a bike lane.

If what he did was really in violation then every single street in NYC would have to have a bike lane. As long as he was following normal road rules and laws such as signaling turns and going with the flow of traffic then he was legal.

Umm, It's pretty common knowledge that a lot of the buttons have extra symbols if you hold them.

Found this clip a bit interesting, if only for the tomato plant pr0n. Sorry in advance, theres an ad in the beginning. by Caf-fiendin gardening

I'm not sure why he built it 13 feet high, 8 foot would have been sufficient and easier to take care of the plants. It's also an ugly contraption, If I was going to put a planter like that in my front yard it would at least look nice for the neighborhood. I'm sure one of his neighbors called city hall to complain.

Help me correct my asparagus errors.... by yourinternetmobsuxin gardening

[–]Carpenterdon 0 points1 point ago

Why not carefully transplant the entire thing now? What I would do is dig a hole large enough for the entire tote, take a sharp knife and cut along the bottom but keep it in place. Maybe cut a section then tape it with some duct tape, work your way around till the entire bottom is cut free. Place the entire thing in the hole, cut the tape and slide the plastic bottom out from under the tote so the root ball(what there is of it now) is sitting in the hole. Now cut the sides off and slide them up as you fill in the hole. water the ball sufficiently to fill any voids and settle the soil around the plants.

I think is you do this very carefully the plants should be fine. If you wait till next year to transplant them your pushing any harvest back another year.

For future reference, Asparagus should be planted in a trench 10-12 inches below final grade, covered by an inch of soil. Water regularly and watch for growth. Keep covering the new shoots with more soil as they grow. Continue adding soil until you have filled the trench to match the final grade of you bed.

I just planted my first bed this spring too. Though I made a raised bed for mine by digging 6 inches deep and building up the bed with 2 layers concrete retaining wall stones so it's now about 8 inches above the surrounding grade.

Looks like a bonsai tool. Can't think of anywhere the tiny tools would be useful in full size gardening.

No more than regular use though I'd bet.

But isn't one of the main points of a knife block to cover the blades? I can't think of anywhere in our kitchen that would be safe to use. Someone would end up reaching behind it or bumping it enough to slice open a hand.

See if you are going to have a garden you're going to have tools.... I don't know of anyone who has gardens or raised beds who doesn't at least own a hammer and cheap saw.

How can I control pests when I don't know what they are? (Long Island, NY) by _amphitritein gardening

[–]Carpenterdon 0 points1 point ago

I need to ask, do you have a decent wire fence at least 3 feet high around your beds? And are you sure its bugs or insects eating the plants?

It sounds to me like rabbit damage. Bugs won't normally take entire plants out overnight, you'll see holes and ragged edges before the plant is taken off at the stem.

If you don't have anything around the beds, get some 3 or 4 foot tall chicken wire mesh at any hardware store or garden center and put it up around the beds. Be sure to attach the bottom edge of the mesh to the sides of the raised beds or things will crawl under.

If there was(is?) a way to have the cover art for whichever book I currently have open appear as my screensaver via jailbreaking I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I'm betting eventually this will be the default setting on e-readers once publishers actually actively publish in "e" format instead of clinging to paper bound books.

Sorry but I am a professional carpenter and the only time I ever hit wiring is when the "hack" electricians don't tuck the wires into the box.

HELP! Contractor did possibly bad grouting job, can I fix this? by emptysuit221in DIY

[–]Carpenterdon 0 points1 point ago

So he pulled out three rows of tile and the cement board behind those three rows, pulled the old shower pan, installed a new one, reconnected the drain, reinstalled cement board and the three rows of tile(that you bought) and charged you $1900? I'd say you got hosed....

From your comment I am guessing this took him awhile to do. That's a one day job to tear out and replace the tile, and a few hours the next day to grout. I personally would never leave a customer without a shower/bathroom for any longer then necessary. I'd have probably charged you around $350-400 plus material.

Is this "contractor" fully licensed an bonded? Did you get a number of references before hiring him?

I hate to say this because it is basically shooting myself in the foot but for most people going to a "big box home center" like Lowes or Home depot and having there subcontractors do the work is the safest way to go. Unless you do a ton of background research yourself on past jobs and references and actually look at his/her work you really don't know what you are getting in to. Using the contractors at Lowes at the least you know that Lowes is backing there work and vetting there qualifications.
