I took money from a citybank once with my visa. However, I think that was the only western bank I ever saw. Hope your card works with 7/11 atm.

You're welcome :) Just came back from a 3 weeks holiday there. I went to Hakone, dunno about this particular onsen though. Imo, as long as the Onsen has a outdoor bath you'll be happy :) also better to go at lunchtime if you want to be alone. Otherwise, most onsen are opened 24/7 except one hour a day to clean up (usually around 1AM). In Hakone, I recommend going uphill and then make a 2 or 3 hours walk. The vegetation was very different (although not exceptional) from the european mountains vegetation, so it's nice. Also don't expect a nice view of the Fuji, it's probably too wet to see that clearly (except maybe in the morning, very early. Better ask before).

In Kyoto, I don't know, for some reason I could stay only 2 days but my buddy said bike was much better than bus (bus is very slow). I went to the bamboo grove area, and to be honest the bamboo groove itself was disappointing, but the gardens in the area are awesome. I think one of the best thing in Japan are Japanese gardens. There are a lot (hundreds) in Kyoto, so best get a travel guide to help you chose. I don't know how to find an english group.

The dishes are pretty fun to eat too. You'll probably need some help to know how to eat them, don't hesitate to ask your waitress :) Also, for Okonomiyaki, ask to eat on the hot plate (the biiig cooking plate you'll be sitting in front of), and I'd rather eat the Soba (thin noodles) than Udon (fat wormy noodles) version.

Tokyo fish market: I haven't been there to see the auction. However, it's basically a markethall, with lots of trucks and people working, so if you've been to a market in Europe I doubt you'll be very surprised. If you're close, it's not really hard to wake up, take a peek and go back to sleep afterwards though. Entrance is free. There are Sushi Restaurants there, I've eaten there, it was expensive and although it was good, it was not exceptional. I don't know how the prices compare with normal sushi restaurants, so maybe it's not that expensive.

No problem with whipping it out, but if an english menu isn't available, usually there are plastic models of the dished serverd outside, so you can just point out and say "I want that".

Also, try Yakitori once. Yakitori are small kebabs, you eat them while drinking a beer and chatting around (warning, it's not a meal! Don't expect to go out of there bellyful). They are very tasty, a little expensive too. But soooo good.

In restaurant, you can ask for "osusume", the recomendation, the waitress will then give you advice. Also water or tea is usually free, so you don't feel forced to order a drink.

Final advice: you won't be able to withdraw money at most ATM because you have a foreigner card (even Visa or Mastercard, if it's from abroad it won't work). The ATM at 7&11 supermarket always worked for us though. These supermarkets are everywhere and are open until 11pm, so if you need money that's usually the most convenient place to go.

Go to Onsen, or even better, luxury onsen. Eat Okonomiyake, Shabu Shabu and Sukiyaki. In Kyoto, rent a bike.

Am I losing out by not eating a huge breakfast in the morning? by doctorcameltoein gainit

[–]Carambar 0 points1 point ago

I don't know about nutrition, but I also can't eat anything solid after waking up, so I chug a liter of milk before going to work and then eat some chocolate cookies there when I get hungry. You can also mix some chocolate powder with the milk, if it makes it easier to drink.

Viatos poignantly describes how consumerism and social pressure might lead one to trading money for sex. by bluenoteslurin DepthHub

To be honest, the DepthHub post has only a few upvotes, so I suppose most people here also found this comment underwhelming.

For the comment itself, don't forget that 9 redditors out of 10 are morons with shitty taste.

Managed My First Night Sober by xalkaiin stopdrinking

I'll be frank: you're probably going to fail miserably. It's Thursday, and you plan to drink already. After that comes Friday, then Saturday, and by Sunday you'll probably be back to drinking.

I've tried "drinking less" many times before, but it never works. You'll start with one drink a week, then two, then your best buddy has his birthday, then you got a stressful day at work, and you'll be back to being an alcoholic. I'm not sure you've accepted that yet, that you are an alcoholic - a sick person with an addiction to alcohol.

Stay strong bro. The 3rd day was the worst for me, I couldn't think of anything but booze. Drink soda, play vidyagames, go walk your dog or something, but keep strong. Tomorrow you'll be a happy man :D

わたしわにほんごがわかります。Finished first lesson of the Pimsleur Cds. Anybody had any success (or lack of) with this program? by hessprojectin japan

[–]Carambar 2 points3 points ago

I've tried a little, it's mostly a waste of time in my opinion. I'm not criticizing the method itself, but to me reading and writing are much more efficient than listening and watching. For example, I hate video tutorials, because you spend 15 minutes learning something that could have been explained in 3 screenshots. So, in the 45 minutes you've been learning how to say "would you like to drink something", you could have been working much more grammar and vocabulary instead.

The only reason I would use Pimsleur is if you have a one hour ride where you can't use a text book. But even then, you could be using a smartphone app to learn your vocabulary or listen to japanese music.

edit:

The Genki Japanese Method is usually regarded as the best one here on Reddit.

Oh wait, so that's why that scout is always like this. I thought it was a bug or something. Anyway, I think there's one scout who very often does this, although I don't know his name, if it's an exploit he should get a warning.
