I am a former smoker. It is very hard to quit. For your own sake, please don't start. Nothing against those that currently enjoy it, but once you realize that you need to quit you will hate yourself for ever starting.

Well before learning about Stoicism I was sorta close. I used to study (though I did not consider myself) Buddhism. Ultimately I was disillusioned with Buddhism so I sort of developed my own philosophy that was closer to Stoicism. What made Seneca's letters resonate with me so well was the fact that my own philosophy agreed with it, yet Seneca articulated it so much better than I could. It was also a lot more complete a philosophy than my own.

I've been studying it ever since (Though I'm still relatively new to it). I am a much happier person since I started studying Stoicism.

One thing I will say is that being happy takes PRACTICE. You cannot simply will yourself into being happy, even though happiness is all mental. It is a struggle at first, but it is one that I have improved greatly.
