So I made a noob mistake today... by gregorykicksin scuba

[–]Brrrtje 1 point2 points ago

You know how you're supposed to open your tank all the way, then half a turn back? And then, when you forget that you've already opened it, you turn it all the way close, then half a turn back? And how you don't notice it's closed during a check, because after all, air *does come out of your octopus and inflater?

And then, only when you're at 20 meters, you notice something is horribly wrong, because you can't get enough air?

Happened to me on my instructor's exam.

  • No, it wasn't my buddy's fault. PADI says this is part of the buddy check, but my agency teaches that you should check it yourself.

You want a physicist to speak at your funeral... by rationalhubin atheism

If having a physicist at my funeral causes my family to treat science as if it's a religion, I'd be very disappointed.

Dat zou dan eerder een argument zijn om de manier waarop universiteiten betaald krijgen aan te passen, dan om uitlopende studenten te pakken.

5 Myths about Scuba Diving by bookyourdivein scuba

[–]Brrrtje 4 points5 points ago

5 is not a myth, at least not where I live. It may be that there's one gal for every two guys that start, but after a few times of walking across the dyke with 10 kg of lead on your hips, the women tend to get put off a little. Even worse than the weight is the macho attitue by the guys, with their $ 3000,- dual tank kits, their bragging and ogling. Most clubs I see have only the men diving, and the women watching them from the shore. When I tell people that my club has a 50/50 ratio of men vs women, I see jaws dropping, and guys acting like this relevant XKCD.

He probably did. Nobody reads Marx anymore. I shure haven't - but I still agree that of all the people to complain about the corporate branding of life, Thomas Friedman seems unlikely, if not hypocritical.

Tipping Divemasters by SSMonkeybusinessin scuba

[–]Brrrtje 5 points6 points ago

In my times as a divemaster in SEA, the largest tip I have ever received was a beer. It wasn't just me, either, all the other guys and girls' experiences were the same. So yeah, because SEA caters more to Europeans than to Americans, tipping isn't really a part of the system.

Nobody's gonna gob in your first stage if you don't tip. However, what with Indonesia being piss poor and divemasters making next to nothing even if it weren't, any tips you can spare will be very much appreciated. Treat is more like rewarding good service than as something obligatory: if the guide gave you a good time, pointed out some tiny little shrimp that you wouldn't have found by yourself, why not tip awesomely?

Sounds like a worthy enterprise. I can just about repair a bike tire, and that's it. Would love to learn more about fixing broken stuff.

is it wrong of me to think a person who believes something like this is of inferior intelligence? by nholiverin WTF

[–]Brrrtje 0 points1 point ago

Well, not morally wrong, but probably factually wrong. However, the fact that some racists or bigots are actually intelligent, does not save them from being assholes.

An excellent article by journalist Peter McKnight about the growing problem of publishing unrepeated (and even unrepeatable) research results. by monesyin TrueReddit

Yes, but then in the reproduction, you would still have to reject the hypothesis. Which is what the AmGen guys did.

As a Dutchie, I have not the slightest idea why you would be offended. If you are reffering to the v-sign, maybe you would want to read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_sign#The_V_for_Victory_campaign_and_the_victory.2Ffreedom_sign

Well, if I recall correctly boxers are the best payed athletes in the world, and being the absolute best boxer in the world would limit the amount of brain damage. So yeah, boxing.

To be fair, a small excercise in statistics is in order.

The standard acceptable p-value for scientific research is 0,05. That means that for your study, a chance (risk) of 5% exists that your hypothesis is in fact untrue, but your results simply stem from chance. Of course, not every study comes out at exactly p = 0,05, so let's say the chance is 1%.

Now, let's assume that we research 10.000 compounds for potential anti-cancer activity. And let's assume that one in a thousand compounds actually has this activity. Also, let's assume that we reject zero working compounds (that is, we make no type II errors).

That means that statistically, we should expect 100 false positives and 10 true positives to arise. Not because anybody is lying or making mistakes, but just because of the way science works.

Black Women and Fat: "Chemically... black fat may be the same as white fat. Culturally it is not." by thesecretbarnin TrueReddit

[–]Brrrtje 1 point2 points ago

If you think they wouldn't be, it's up to you to provide the numbers, Helm. Fat people are economically less productive in terms of money, but this is at least in part because they get vigorously discriminated against on the labour market, and because of other confounding variables. They also have slightly more sick days, but so do people with children.

Cool Scuba films or docs? by stacksofpaperin scuba

Well, if nobody else is saying it, then I for one will mention that Finding Nemo is even better for divers than for landlubbers. Even less serious is The Cave, but it does have some hefty rebreather cavediving.
