Smoker for 3 years, finally decided to quit. I know it isn't a record, but I'm proud by Jack_fuckin pics

I find it awesome that two weeks of not smoking = a steak dinner. That alone would help motivate me, were I a smoker. Keep finding that motivation!

It's on the south side (the one that faces Rollins). Google map it - it's near the southeast corner of the building.

I'll be honest that the first time I saw "Blink" I wasn't all that scared - intrigued, but not scared. However, the more I watch it, the more I get into the concept of the angels - and the more it freaks me the frick out. Now I find myself saying "don't blink" to my misses on a regular basis... and every time I pop in "Blink" it starts to freak me out more and more.

Whoa... goosebumps have arrived.

The numbers will drop slightly to accomodate for more studying space and some natural lighting changes, yes. But in the big picture, Res Life is adding beds over the next few construction projects. Big picture is growth, and trying to guess what enrollment numbers will look like ten years from now.

[–]BlueJayAggie 0 points1 point ago

I don't know the full extent of the number projections, but Mizzou believes that in the next year or two (or who knows when) the admissions numbers will start to level off. Res Life is examining options, including possibly adding new halls or changing renovation plans to include more bed spaces.

Ideally, we'd like to house all incoming freshmen and even more returners than we presently do. But until the projected numbers more accurately reflect the ongoing reality, we'll always have to scramble.

About the pool: residents of Twain indicated they'd rather use the newer, bigger, better pools at the Rec. Really, it was little more than a liability and a money pit. Nostalgia just wasn't a good enough reason to keep it, given other needs.

Allow me, as an insider, to offer some specifics on what the new Twain will entail.

  1. The outer surface will, by and large, retain the look and feel. It won't be brick, but it will be a special brick-colored ceramic material that sucks the water out of the walls - a huge issue in the old Twain.
  2. The roof is being redone. Completely.
  3. Rooms are being redesigned with the sinks in the restrooms (as opposed to the rooms) to give more space in the rooms themselves. Also, they will have moveable wardrobes instead of those huge built-in closets.
  4. More. Natural. Lighting. Especially in the hallways.
  5. The lobby is being expanded and split into 2 separate entrances: one for the hall, the other for dining. This will allow dining to have completely different hours from the Twain front desk operations.
  6. Say goodbye, asbestos.
  7. The basement is being redesigned to allow for more student-friendly use: kitchen & waiting areas near laundry, study lounge, and a classroom that doesn't feel like a tomb.
  8. More bike parking, and more vehicle parking.
  9. The pool (aka the "watery liability" will be gone, and the dining hall will have more seating capacity.

I know these things because I helped approve the blueprints. That makes me cool and an expert on everything. Right? :)

Ref Mantra by thesilverspyderin rollerderby

It's not as bad when you're following the pack or a jammer. The constant focal point actually helps keep you from getting dizzy. It's the Inside NSO's that I admire - there's almost no way to do that job without some head-spinning.

Yay referees!

Roller derby and mental health: I could really use some advice by thievingmagpie79in rollerderby

[–]BlueJayAggie 5 points6 points ago

As a ref, I often see many of our newer skaters - mental health issues or not - experiencing many of the things you've mentioned here. The advice that we give them, as we give anyone finding themselves in the penalty box, is to simply slow down, take a deep breath, figure out how & why the issue happened, and commit yourself to ensuring you don't do it anymore. It's far from foolproof - but using that time to "relax and reflect" as appropriate can make the rest of your on-track jams feel a bit more strategic.

Undoubtedly people have told you "not to be so hard on yourself" and other such advice - whether or not they know about your mental health issues, the real message behind their advice is that they want you to see the good in what you're doing on the track. Yes, some things happened that you wish hadn't - the same can be said of even the most seasoned veterans. But what did you do that you were proud of? What fun/cool/important things did you learn/experience during the game? Tackle this challenge just as strategically as you tackle your other bipolar issues. Let your counselor know what you experienced, and ask him/her if they have any advice (or could find any through sport medicine connections, etc.).

As for the alcohol situation, it sounds that you were strategic enough to recognize that it wasn't a great situation for you, and you were careful - you should take pride in making the right decision there despite other things having gone less than perfect that day. That's never an easy decision, especially when you're newer to the league and want to fit in with the general derby culture. Gold star!

Any derby league will have its stressors, and even moreso for someone who has mental health issues. Seek out those in your league that seem to understand you better, and surround yourself with positive people who will help you learn and make the right decisions for yourself (both in-game and generally). It's not perfect, but what is?

Seconded. It's well-written and provides a phenomenal twist on many elements of Abe's young life, where he traveled quite a bit and had many odd acquaintances.

We're a good crew, but there've been some rough practices where few-to-none could show up. We all have jobs with crazy busy seasons, and this time a lot of them just overlapped.

And I agree about the advice!
