I hope they weren't economics textbooks.

BA or BS? by freedogg22in academiceconomics

[–]Bigbrass 2 points3 points ago

I'm halfway through my senior year in the UofM's Economics BS program and I had to make the same decision you're about to.

The main difference between BAs I've met and the education I've experienced can be measured in math. Both programs will teach roughly the same concepts, but a BS will spend more time exploring the mathematical foundations of these concepts than a BA. I can't speak about usefulness after undergraduate studies, but from where I'm sitting I feel like I got the better of the two options.

That being said, it has been rigorous and relentless. I transferred from a community college where it was easy to sleep during class and make passing grades. Once I started coursework within my program, it became gameface 24/7. The math track will build on itself continuously and glossing over material that doesn't seem relevant can and will come back to kick your ass.

One thing I've noticed is the pre-reqs given by the college are better viewed as guidelines than hard rules. I can give countless examples of being taught material today that I was tested on months ago in a different context. This has been the biggest challenge in my experience: Accepting and working with an idea that I don't grasp formally.

Hope this helps!

I'd be happy to! I can't promise great insights as I'm a little rocky on the material in general but I'd love to see and help with similar work. . . This area is downright fascinating.

This is some fantastic work. I'm excited to take another swing at this problem and your approach is something I never would have thought of on my own.

If you don't mind, I might be incorporating this approach in my next run-through. I'll run the numbers from scratch but this info looks wicked helpful for finding a good starting point.

Haha, I share your sentiment in spades. Reading through what I wrote this morning, it was painfully clear that I couldn't decide on what I was writing. Others have mentioned the delivery is all over the place.

I've gotten a lot of great feedback, and I plan to spend some time taking your advice to heart and pulling together a more cohesive presentation of my thought process.

You might want to look into grading undergrad papers; you pinpointed the only Wikipedia copypasta ಠ_ಠ

The Lightning Bolt Problem (Or, using Magic: The Gathering as a gateway for analysis with R) by Bigbrassin statistics

[–]Bigbrass[S] 0 points1 point ago

The more I think about the remark, the more I'm convinced there's something not quite right in there. I deduced the only two openers that don't work under this model are:

Bx7 or Bx6, Mx1

7 bolts immediately can't work for obvious reasons, and since k is either 7 or 8, I came up with these cases:

Bx7 -> MMM or MMB or MBM or BMM

Then the same process once again:

Bx6, Mx1 -> BBM or BMM or BBM or BMB

So that's 8 cases rather than the 10 I mentioned. I'm going to do some more work on this part and I really like your 2 in the first 8 observation.

I've been considering doing a project like this. Take limited decks for example. It's easy to see what kind of opening hands to expect with the usual 23/17 spread, but what if you were to model it after curving out: How likely are you to have an nth land on the nth turn?

From there it's just a hop skip and a jump to mana curve optimization. . . at least I hope :)

Cabin In The Woods... [SPOILERS] by Bigred7892in movies

Honestly, of all the trope demolitions this movie dished out, this one in particular tickled my fancy.

Leave it to Mr. Whedon to undo the horrible taste in my mouth left by Prince of Persia Sands of Time.

Tell spam they've got Chreman to thank. I'm the guy who kicked off some pretty solid Wabo vs Fortune Unicorn drama back in the day. Good times.
